ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Rangers have acquired catcher Robinson Chirinos from Tampa Bay for a player to be named or cash. The deal was announced Monday, before the teams opened a three-game series in Texas. Chirinois, designated for assignment March 31 when Tampa Bay set its opening-day roster, was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. The catcher didn't play in 2012 after sustaining a concussion in spring training when A foul tip struck his mask. The Rangers designated Jeff Beliveau (bell-eh-VOH) for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. They have 10 days to trade or release him or send him outright to the minors. With their first major league trade with Texas, the only team the Rays haven't completed a deal with is the New York Yankees.

Darvish exits Sunday's game early with blister

ARLINGTON, Texas Nearly untouchable just five days ago, Yu Darvish was done in by a blister Sunday. Darvish left after five innings against the Angels because of a blister on his right ring finger. It was Darvish's first start since retiring the first 26 batters against the Astros on Tuesday. Rangers officials said the blister does not appear to be serious. Previously, Darvish...

Rays manager enraged by umpire's blown call

ARLINGTON, Texas Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said he can often tell when an umpire knows he's blown a call by the look on his face. "I've seen eyes twitch," Maddon said after Monday's 5-4 loss to the Texas Rangers. "The look tonight indicated, 'Let's run for the hills.'" Maddon said that look came from hope plate umpire Marty Foster...

State of the Rays: Price off to rough start

These are different times for David Price. His offseason was spent, deservedly so, receiving the spoils of his American League Cy Young Award earned last season. His name has been mentioned, deservedly so, as a star who could command a contract that soon prices him out of Tampa Bay the lone franchise he has known in his five-plus-year major-league career. But the past week has served...

Rangers answer questions in series vs. Angels

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers may not have been able to answer the impossible question of whether or not they play in a baseball town this weekend. But they did find out that their offense can still put up runs despite the absence of Josh Hamilton. They did find out that their new bullpen has some strong arms, as Tanner Scheppers stole the show Sunday night. The question...

Texas Closer Joe Nathan Hits a Milestone--but Should Not Have

Joe Nathan has been one of the better pitchers in the business for much of hid career, and when he entered the ninth inning with a two run cushion he was looking at the chance to notch career save No. 300. It wasn't the cleanest of innings. He did give up a pair of hits and a run, but when Ben Zobrist came up to bat for the Rays Joe was one out away from earning the save and...

Texas welcomes Tampa Bay with two wins

The Rangers are en route to winning their third series of the season.  It’s hard not to be happy about that.  In fact, with the exception of the first game (and Derek Lowe and Michael Kirkman), the team has looked pretty solid. I knew nothing about Nick Tepesch going into tonight’s game.  As I mentioned before, I was a little out of commission during spring training, so I...

Rangers power past Angels

The Texas Rangers clinched their three-game home-opening series even with Yu Darvish being far from perfect. Lance Berkman, David Murphy and Ian Kinsler homered for Texas in a 7-3 victory over Josh Hamilton and the AL West rival Los Angeles Angels on Sunday night. Darvish (2-0) came within one out of a perfect game in his first start five days earlier at Houston, but trailed the...

Rays Will Wear Letterman Jackets to Boston as Part of Club’s ‘Themed Dress Tip’ (Photo)

The last time a team wore letterman jackets to Boston for a pro sports game, it didn’t work out too well for the boys in the jackets. The Tampa Bay Rays are going to try and change that around. Tampa manager Joe Maddon tweeted Monday that the club’s “first themed dress trip of the season” will see the team wearing letterman jackets on their trip from Texas to Boston. If you...

Roy Oswalt: I would love to come back to Philly

With Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay, not to mention the bullpen, really struggling out of the gate this season you would expect a good general manager to always be keeping an eye on potential options for down the road this season. Could former Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt be a name worth keeping an eye on? If the Phillies happen to give him a call, he might be open to at least listening...
