It took them 162 games and the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers couldn’t settle the battle for the second American League Wild Card berth. They will meet tonight in a tiebreaker game in Texas at 8pm ET on TBS to decide who gets to move on to AL Wild Card game in Cleveland on Wednesday.
Texas earned the right to host the tiebreaker game based on their 4-3 record against Tampa Bay this season. The game will feature two left-handed starting pitchers, Tampa Bay ace David Price will face Texas rookie Martin Perez.
Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz is eligible to be activated from the suspended list for tonight’s game. He served a 50 game suspension for his part of the Biogenesis scandal. Cruz could end up being a difference maker for the Rangers.
Price has struggled in his appearances at the Ballpark in Arlington against the Rangers. Cruz in particular has feasted off Price and his offerings. These two things will be important factors to watch in tonight’s game. Will Cruz be rusty coming off his long layoff and can Price conquer his demons pitching in Texas?
The Indians get to sit back and enjoy the game as they await the winner of this game as a result of their, 10-0, finish to the regular season. Both Texas and Tampa Bay finished the regular season with an 8-2 record over their last ten games.
Cleveland’s scorching hot finish vaulted them from one game behind Texas and Tampa to one game ahead of them. It also earned them the right to host the AL Wild Card game. Rookie flame-thrower Danny Salazar is expected to get the start for Cleveland on Wednesday.
In the National League Wild Card game the Pittsburgh Pirates will host the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow night. The Reds Johnny Cueto will face the Pirates Francisco Liriano at 8pm ET also on TBS.
