Tonight's performance by Jon Lester was a good example why the term "quality start" is so problematic. Technically, he registered one: six innings, three runs, three walks, five hits, four K's. Blah. It didn't really feel like quality out there, but I guess holding the opponent to three runs (especially when your bullpen maintains the lead) should be enough with this Sox team. It wasn't, and they dropped the contest 3-2 to Baltimore. Eck said it best -- midway through the game there was a pause and he said something to the effect of the game feeling more like 5-2 or so. It just seemed like the Orioles were outplaying Boston. Shane Victorino had another strong night, with two hits, including another one of his line-drive home runs over the Monster. Victorino also covered a ton of ground in right field running down a few fly balls in the gap, leading to those "You know, it sure is nice to have a center fielder in right field" conversations in the booth (and probably in bars around New England as well). Daniel Nava had three hits and Jacoby Ellsbury added two. Ellsbury had a nice personal achievement, stealing his 50th bag of the season. He stole it on a pitch-out that Matt Wieters misfired to 2nd...and it would've been close even if he had thrown it well. Nobody else could do much against Chris Tillman, whose strong career numbers against Boston continued. Neither Sox reliever looked good, as Matt Thornton gave up two hits and Brandon Workman got himself into a jam in the 9th as he struggled to find the strike zone. Workman ended up throwing 43 pitches splitting time between the 8th and 9th, and Craig Breslow retired Chris Davis with two on to keep them in the game. The Sox did rally in the 9th with Nava reaching on an odd infield single thanks to some miscommunication between Jim Johnson and Davis, but Jonny Gomes promptly GIDP'd to remove the threat. Box score
