The Sox dropped to 12-17 after blowing a 4-3 lead on a Billy Butler home run, and couldn't claw their way back against closer William Howard Taft Jonathan Broxton.

Daniel Bard pitched a solid seven innings, but unraveled in the 8th, by putting on the go-ahead run before being replaced by Matt Albers in a one-run ballgame. Albers tried to put a fastball in on Butler's hands, but Billy saw it coming and sent it out to the fountain in left-center.

It's too bad, but this seems to be the story with Daniel. He has flashes of brilliance: he was essentially flawless in innings 3-6. But a disturbing 2nd inning -- punctuated by two balks, including one that was directly responsible for a run -- and the walks in the 8th show that the consistency isn't there.

Some will blame Bobby Valentine for Bard being out there for the 8th, and it's a consideration. Bard was at 92 pitches, but has shown difficulty pitching late into games. I sympathize with Bobby on this though: Pitchers only develop the ability to go deep into games if you, you know, actually ask them to do it. Maybe it will pay dividends in the long run.

The offense did show up, collecting nine hits, including two each for Adrian Gonzalez and Marlon Byrd. One potentially troubling note: Will Middlebrooks had to be replaced after straining his left hamstring, which is the same injury that caused him to miss a game last week. Hopefully there will be more details in the morning as to whether this injury will sideline Will any longer.
