Boston Red Sox
Tampa Bay Rays
11:45 a.m. ET: Good morning from sunny Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles will square of in a Sunday matinee just under two hours from now.
Saturday was a long day at the ballpark for these teams, as the Red Sox took Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader 3-2 on a walk-off single by Jonathan Herrera before the O’s rebounded with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
Taking the mound for the Sox in the series finale will be Jake Peavy, who is in desperate need of some good luck. The veteran right-hander has just one win on the season — way back on April 25 — and Boston has lost each of the last six games he’s started.
23-year-old Kevin Gausman will do the honors for Baltimore. Gausman, who made his major league debut last May, is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts this season. He was knocked around in his last outing, allowing five runs in five innings in a loss to the last-place Tampa Bay Rays on June 27.
We’ll have much more on the matchup leading up to first pitch at 1:3...
BEST OF MAXIM
Yesterday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that Boston Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy could draw interest from a few National League teams if the the Red Sox were to eat some of the money he is due for the rest of the season. It is far from likely that they would actually trade him, but teams are still showing interest in him.The Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates were...
Part Of A Mega-Deal?CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman speculates that Boston's hesitancy to trade Will Middlebrooks now might be because they're saving him to be part of a bigger deal for Giancarlo Stanton. Another, more mundane, reason could be that Boston needs all the right-handed power they can muster in their organization—and Middlebrooks has at least shown that capability...
Jon Lester, who (depending upon the source) is or is not talking contract with the Red Sox, will start Game One of today's doubleheader against the mighty Orioles. Boston will send out the following line-up: Brock Holt RF, Daniel Nava LF, Dustin Pedroia 2B, Mike Napoli 1B, A.J. Pierzynski DH, Xander Bogaerts 3B, Stpehen Drew SS, David Ross C, and Jackie Bradley Jr. CF. Apparently...
The Red Sox have been receiving decent trade interest in recent days in third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who's on injury rehab following his slow start in Boston. But while he looks like a logical trade candidate who may benefit from a change of scenery, Red Sox people are said to seem quite reluctant to deal Middlebrooks.
There could be two reasons for this. The first one is...
The Red Sox split the doubleheader and had a chance to take the series if they won the game on Sunday. The Sox had a big rally to tie the game in the 7th inning, but were unable to get the go ahead run and fell to the O’s in the 12th inning.
Jake Peavy took the mound for the Sox and was looking to get his first win in a while. Peavy has not had a winning decision in his last...
ZEBULON, NC -- A late rally from the Carolina Mudcats fell short as the Salem Red Sox escaped Five County Stadium with a 3-2 win on Saturday night.
After trailing by two runs for most of the game, the Mudcats began to fight their way back in the final two frames.
In the bottom of the eighth, Yhoxian Medina earned a leadoff walk and used his speed to steal second base to give Carolina...
Following the Boston Red Sox’s 7-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, starting pitcher Jon Lester received some good news as he was selected to his third All-Star Game.
Lester will be the lone Red Sox player to represent the team in the Midsummer Classic on July 15 at Target Field in Minnesota.
“I’m obviously honored,”Lester said after the game. “It’s a big honor...
BOSTON — The Red Sox announced Monday that they have signed ninth-round pick Kevin Steen, a right-handed pitcher out of Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee.
The Red Sox now have signed each of their first 21 selections from the first 20 rounds of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. Overall, Boston has signed 30 of the 41 players the club selected in last month’s draft.
The Chicago White Sox visit Fenway Park on Monday for the opener of a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox eager to wash the taste of Sunday’s 12-inning loss out of their mouths.
The Red Sox’s lineup for Monday’s game is virtually unchanged from the one they trotted out a day earlier, with the only tweak being the swapping of A.J. Pierzynski for David Ross behind the plate...
Nelson Cruz’s five-hit night helped send Red Sox right-hander John Lackey to an early exit in the Orioles’ 7-4 win over Boston in the nightcap of the teams’ doubleheader, but after the game, Lackey didn't have much positive to say about Cruz.
Cruz was 3-for-3 with a double and homer off Lackey.
He doubled and singled off Lackey in his first two at-bats of the game, then...
Happy post-4th, America. Last week we had an abbreviated week of picks due to the holiday, but when last we spoke we had a last-second change of heart thanks to some pre-hurricane weather conditions in Boston.
Initially we were going with Brandon Workman against a Cubs offense that hadn’t been scoring at all, but just before gametime we swapped out Workman and swapped in a trio...
Boston, Ma- With the Red Sox coming off a 3-2 walkoff win earlier in the day, they give the ball to John Lackey, who has a 9-5 record with a 3.62 ERA. Although he pitched well in the first game,Jon Lester was denied his tenth win of the season. Lackey doesn't want to be as unlucky, so a win tonight would give him ten wins, which only 5 other American League pitchers have. For...
The Boston Red Sox have been up and down this season, and have a chance to right the ship against some Sox of a different color.
The Red Sox start a four-game series Monday night (weather-permitting) against the Chicago White Sox, and Boston has seen a fair share of success at Fenway Park against the ChiSox. NESN Nation’s Alison Smith has more in the video above.Filed under: Alison...
