Boston Red Sox righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka is hoping to return to the mound in June.
Matsuzaka, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2011, had a strong bullpen session Sunday, throwing hard and using his secondary pitches.
The 31-year-old Matsuzaka, who is entering the final year of his contract with Boston, finished 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight games - seven starts - last season.
He won 33 games in his first two seasons with the Red Sox, including an 18-3 record in 2008, but is only 16-15 in the last three seasons.

Michael Silverman of the Herald has the bad news that Carl Crawford's previously hasty recovery is indeed taking a setback:
A medical examination today revealed inflammation in the left wrist of Carl Crawford, which increases the likelihood that he will not be ready for Opening Day.
Crawford will be shut down from hitting and throwing for the next five to seven days in order...
Alex Hassan is a 23 year old outfielder who spent all last year playing for the Portland Sea Dogs. Hassan is a Massachusetts native who grew up in Milton. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the 20th round of the 2009 draft. Hassan has done nothing but impress since being drafted by the Sox. He is known for his excellent plate discipline and ability to grind out at bats. He received an...
Cody Ross plays the game with plenty of passion and has a swing that's tailor-made for Fenway Park. In other words, Red Sox fans could soon learn to love the gritty outfielder. Ross, who The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo described as a "Trot Nixon type of player," started off his spring with a bang on Saturday, homering twice in Boston's 25-0 rout of Northeastern...
This is from Ian Browne at MLB.comFORT MYERS, Fla. -- For years, Spring Training has represented a fresh start for lanky lefty Andrew Miller. It is a time when he could go back to the drawing board and try to get back to being the dominant pitcher that made him a first-round pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. If the 26-year-old Miller wants to take one of those spots by the...

FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Another setback has slowed Carl Crawford's bid for a starting spot on Opening Day. After a few swings on Tuesday, the Red Sox outfielder sensed pain in his left wrist –– the same one that was surgically repaired in early January. He aggravated it more during bunting drills on Wednesday and will be shut down for a few days. "You're always concerned...
FORT MYERS, Fla. –– The competition for the fifth spot in the Red Sox rotation has been reduced. Carlos Silva, who was originally scheduled to pitch Wednesday against the Blue Jays, is battling shoulder inflammation, Bobby Valentine revealed Tuesday. It shortens the rotation competition to Felix Doubront, Vicente Padilla, Aaron Cook, Andrew Miller and Alfredo Aceves. "Silva...
Last week, new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine tried to force himself into the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry by throwing jabs at Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. And while all the banter is meaningless and for the birds, the Yankees just won any sort of pre-season back and forth with Valentine. During spring training in Fort Myers, Florida, the Red Sox Foundation hold an annual ...
Well, it looks like another Major League Baseball team is out to limit alcohol and its effects on performance. As newly crowned Chicago Cubs president, Theo Epstein wants his players to get a good night's rest before each game. After all of the news that came out regarding the Red Sox clubhouse this offseason, it seems only fitting that Epstein would impose some sort of regulation...
Red Sox Live Blog: David Ortiz, Dan Butler Go Deep As Sox Dominate Twins 10-2Yay Papi! Yay Dan Butler! Wait, who? This guy. He's on pace to catch Ruth. (I suppose all the rookies are, at this point.) But seriously, it's nice to see a rookie make an impression so soon.
It is time for the start of the Terry Francona impersonation era!
The Tim Kurkjian impressions have been abundant during this years spring training camp and just when they were starting to get old, this Terry Francona impersonation saved the day. Watch as quirky ex-BoSox’s closer Jonathon Papelbon does a spot on impersonation of his old manager, chew and all. Nice!
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Josh Beckett pitched two scoreless innings and Lars Anderson hit a grand slam, leading manager Bobby Valentine and the Boston Red Sox to an 8-3 victory over a Minnesota Twins split squad in their spring training opener Sunday.
Beckett gave up one hit with two strikeouts for Boston, which beat Northeastern 25-0 and Boston College 6-3 Saturday in exhibition...

The subject of today’s player profile is 5th starter/Alfredo Aceves-esque swingman Felix Doubont. A young lefty with gobs of potential, is this the year that Doubront finally puts it all together at the big league level? Read on to see what we think!
How much of this will we see in 2012?
The Backstory: Signed as a 16 year old projectable lefty...
8 a.m. ET: The Red Sox got a head start in the pursuit of the Mayor's Cup -- that is if Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire plans to give it up. Both teams will go at it again on Monday. This time, the game will take place at Hammonds Stadium, the Twins' facility in Fort Myers. On Sunday, Red Sox first base prospect Lars Anderson was the unlikely hero to blow the game open against...
