Found September 13, 2013 on Hall of Very Good:

If you ever needed a reminder just how good Mariano Rivera is...consider this.  Sunday night, before the New York Yankees square off against their hated rivals, the Boston Red Sox, the legendary closer's career will be celebrated during a pre-game ceremony. Rivera is in the home stretch of his final season, so it is actually fitting that, as he travels stadium to stadium stockpiling retirement presents, one of his final appearances will be at Fenway Park.  You see, the future Hall of Famer’s 55 appearances at the 102-year-old park is actually tops among any visiting pitcher.  On the flip side, when Rivera's regular-season career will come to a close in Houston where, in 19 years, he's never taken the mound.

Photo: Red Sox website boasts beard styles worn by own players

The Boston Red Sox are serious about their beards. So much so, in fact, that there is a template on their team website that features a chart distinguishing each player's beard apart from one another.   Tuesday night’s game against the Rays didn’t come easy for Ryan Dempster, but he kept the Red Sox in the game, and they eventually pulled away with the W. The right-hander tossed five innings on the night, and he struggled with command throughout his outing, but he was able to minimize the damage, allowing only one earned run to cross the plate. Dempster...

The Yankees should name this man their new, de facto Captain

He has no friends, no future career, no public defenders. To the baseball world, he is a pariah, an untouchable, a sadistic monster who should be spat-upon, beaned and booed.Every time A-Rod gets a hit, a demon in Hell receives his wings.Say whatever you want about Alex Rodriguez. No one will defend him.  But know this:The Yankees were dead as dishrags before he turned up in the...

Jarrod Saltalamacchia Says Jake Peavy ‘Threw the Ball Well’ in Loss to Rays (Video)

Thursday night’s outing was a bit of a rough one for Jake Peavy.  Peavy allowed just three runs in the game, but he struggled with his control, tying a season high with five walks over six innings. The game was tied when the right-hander departed, but Boston’s bullpen crumbled in the eighth, allowing the Rays to escape with a 4-3 win in the final meeting of the regular season...

#GetBeard

Three months ago, I wrote a post extolling the virtues of the various beards of the 2013 Boston Red Sox. It was intended as a whimsical post: I thought the scruffy beards were fun, and fitting for the kind of “anything goes” personality the team was developing.  It has since become the most viewed post on my blog, as Red Sox fans actively search for information about their...
