The Cincinnati Reds hope to be buyers at July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but general manager Walt Jocketty knows it's going to be tough to get deals done.

Cincinnati would like to add a leadoff man, a cleanup hitter and bench help.

"I'm not sure of any of it is possible," Jocketty said, "but that's what we're trying to do."

With so many teams still in the race, thanks to the added wild card, buyers outnumbers sellers at this point.

"I think it's going to be (a seller's market)," Jocketty said.

The Reds also are thin on big-league-ready prospects after the offseason trades to get Mat Latos and Sean Marshall.

Does Jocketty think he can swing a big deal?

"Right now, I'd say no because we're not close," he said. "I'm not sure there's a big deal out there to be made."

The Reds have been rumored to be interested in the Philadelphia Phillies' Juan Pierre and the San Diego Padres' Mark Kotsay. Jocketty won't comment on active trade talks, but both make sense in light of leadoff and bench needs.

Cincinnati moved back into a tied for first place in the NL Central by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 Friday in the first game after the All-Star break. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who overtook the Reds for first at the break, lost 10-7 to the Milwaukee Brewers.
