PLAYERS: Johnny Cueto
TEAMS: Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto is hoping to be back in action this Sunday. Cueto's 2013 campaign has had it's ups and downs thus far, as this is Cueto's second time on the disabled list this season. The first stint was April 15-May 19, when Cueto was sidelined with a strained right lat muscle.  This time, Cueto's injury is listed as a right-shoulder strain. His time on the DL is retroactive to June 1, which leaves him eligible to come off the DL on Sunday, his regular day in the rotation. According to C. Trent Rosecrans of, Cueto threw 35 pitches from the mound on Tuesday and was quoted as saying "I felt really good...I feel ready now."  In Cueto's stead, left-hander Tony Cingrani has pitched well, but may find himself back in Louisville for his next start. He has pitched to the tune of 3-0 with a 3.15 ERA in Cueto's absence.  When healthy, Cueto has been dominant this season.  He is 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA, with a WHIP of 0.88 and a .157 opponents batting average against in six starts, however staying healthy has been an issue. According to Rob Hoff of Yahoo Sports, Cueto has already missed a total of seven starts.  Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Phillips imitates teammate's stance

Your browser does not support iframes. Brandon Phillips was in a playful mood Wednesday afternoon after Todd Frazier belted a go-ahead home run during the seventh inning. Frazier's blast put the Reds in front, 2-1, at the time and proved to be the decisive blow as Cincinnati recorded its 12th straight victory at Wrigley Field. Frazier was immediately greeted in the dugout...

Partch is hero in 14-inning game

Putting in a picture of Broxton here because I don’t have one of Partch.Well, the Reds may have been unable to take their thirteenth consecutive win at Wrigley Field today, but how about that Curtis Partch, huh? He wasn’t so much his first time out, but tonight he soaked up four of the fourteen innings in that debacle against the Cubs. Even Mat Latos only pitched six. And they...

Signing Zach Duke for bullpen insurance

Zach Duke pitching for the Washington Nationals. The Cincinnati Reds signed former Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Zach Duke today. Duke is expected to join the AAA Louisville Bats. As far as the signing goes, I think the key part about it is that Duke is left handed. Currently, the only left-handed relievers in the Reds’ bullpen are Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman. Chapman is the closer...

Baker says Chapman staying put - no 2-inning saves

CINCINNATI The once nearly impenetrable Cincinnati Reds bullpen suddenly has sprung more leaks than a colander, particularly in the critical eighth inning, so the constituents in the stands are asking: Why not use closer Aroldis Chapman in the eighth and ninth? It is not going to happen no discussion, no debate, no but, but, but, buts.Manager Dusty Baker is as adamant about his...

Reds to hold mass wedding at Great American Ball Park

If you and your special someone have been thinking about tying the knot lately than I have just the time and place for you two to do so. On Friday, August 2, the Reds are offering couples the chance to say "I do" in the first ever mass wedding at Great American Ball Park. The couples will have the opportunity to exchange vows on the field before the Reds play host...

Reds sign Zack Duke to minor league contract

The Reds have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Zach Duke to a minor league contract, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Duke, 30, was recently released by the Washington Nationals after tallying an 8.71 ERA in 12 appearances spanning 20.2 innings. Duke was assigned to Triple-A Louisville and catcher Konrad Schmidt was released to make room on the roster....

Reds look to change recent home skid

The Cincinnati Reds had the majors' best home record earlier this month. They've hardly been playing their best at Great American Ball Park since then. The Reds open a seven-game homestand Friday night against the improving Milwaukee Brewers, who could be without Ryan Braun again. After being denied a four-game sweep over the Chicago Cubs with Thursday's 6-5, 14-inning...

Cincinnati Reds: A family feud in left field

I hopped on a blog website a couple days ago, and one of the first posts I read was “Xavier Paul: Why is he still here?” Derrick Robinson might be one of the fastest guys on the Reds. His speed has helped turn many single hits, into doubles. Then, in the third game of the most recent series against the Cubs, he went 2-4 with a run, a double and  a homer that brought in three...

Latos Looks to Continue Strong Pitching in Chicago

The Cincinnati Reds have gotten back on track in their series against the Chicago Cubs, largely due to their performance on the mound. The Reds appear to have a good chance to continue that outstanding pitching and their lengthy winning streak at Wrigley Field with Mat Latos taking the ball in Thursday's finale.Mike Leake provided the latest strong outing Wednesday when he allowed...

Cueto to return; Cingrani to remain

CINCINNATI It is Go Johnny, Go once again for Johnny Cueto for the second time this season he comes off the disabled list to rejoin the Cincinnati Reds rotation on Sunday.Cueto faces the Milwaukee Brewers on Fathers Day, only his sixth start this season due to a persistent lat problem that twice pushed him off the pitching mound. And as it seems to always happen with the Reds this...

Betancourt, Chapman, and the Sordid Business of Defection

(Image: AP/David J. Phillip) This weekend’s three-game series between the Reds and Brewers includes two players – Yuniesky Betancourt and Aroldis Chapman – who took a more tortured path than most to the big leagues.  Both are Cuban players who defected from their home country to play professionally in the United States. As someone of Cuban heritage, I’m particularly...
