The Giants have reportedly rejected a blockbuster trade offer by the Yankees that would have included (from left to right) Montero, Swisher and Cain.

According to Mike Silva’s NY Baseball Digest, the New York Yankees offered the Giants a boatload of talented players in exchange for starting pitcher Matt Cain.

The Giants have reportedly rejected the blockbuster proposal.

NY Baseball Digest writer Frank Russo says the Yankees were offering outfielder Nick Swisher, top prospect Jesus Montero, and a couple of minor league pitchers from a list that included Dellin Betances, Hector Noesi, David Phelps and Adam Warren, all of whom are very good prospects.

Swisher, 31, batted .260 with 23 HR and 85 RBI in 2011. The former Oakland Athletic is a career .254 hitter and has never batted higher than .288 (2010).

Montero is one of baseball’s most promising prospects. The 21-year old catcher hit .328/.406/.590 (0.996 OPS) with 4 HR and 12 RBI in just 18 games with the Yanks in 2011. He blasted 76 home runs in 4+ minor league seasons before getting the call last year. His defense is pretty shoddy, but he’s a legit hitter.

Cain, 27, went 12-11 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.083 WHIP for the Giants last year. He struck out 179 batters and walked 63 in 221.2 innings. The right-hander, who has averaged 212 innings per year in his first six full seasons, can become a free agent at the end of the 2012 season and the Giants are trying hard to lock him up to a multi-year extension this winter.

The Yankees are desperate for starting pitching and also have reportedly tried to acquire Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez and the Cubs’ Matt Garza.

While the Giants may sorely be in need of the kind of offensive punch Swisher and Montero can deliver, Swisher is a free agent after the 2012 season, and the G-men already have Buster Posey behind the dish.

It’s a tempting offer, to be sure, but the Giants made the right call by “flat out turning down the deal.”
