Throughout his career Oakland Athletics second baseman Eric Sogard has been overlooked because of his bifocals and slight frame. Coming into the season, Sogard looked like he would make the team as a 25th man, who would move back and forth between Sacramento and Oakland. However, Sogard was hitting like a man possessed during spring training which led him to become the starting second baseman. The 27 year old Sogard has had an up-and-down season, but he has recently showed that he is the type of scrappy bottom of the lineup hitter that every championship team needs. It looked as though Sogard would lose his starting job twice before the trading deadline. Not only were the A’s looking at Phillies second baseman Chase Utley but they gave young prospect Grant Green the opportunity to replace Sogard. Once Green showed he was not able to handle second base defensively in the MLB, the A’s traded for utility man Alberto Callaspo. What has been most impressive about Sogard over the last few months is his stellar defensive play. During Saturday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians, Sogard made gold glove type of plays to help stop the Indians offensive onslaught. While Sogard will probably never win a gold glove, he has shown enough glove to help preserve some A’s victories this year. The A’s will basically be in playoff mode all the way up to October. Sogard will provide the bottom of the lineup spark that the A’s didn’t get in the playoffs last year. The A’s can look no further than across the bay at the San Francisco Giants Marco Scutaro (Still can’t believe we traded him to keep Bobby Crosby) to see what a scrappy middle infielder can do for a championship team.   You can follow Jorge on twitter @jraycontreras or add him to your network on google Jorge is the co-founder of  Football and Futbol , Bay Sports Report , Cascadia Sports and Sports Report Arizona
