The Detroit Tigers will bring both Rick Porcello and Drew Smyly north for the start of the 2013 regular season, with Porcello claiming the fifth spot in the team’s loaded rotation. That, plus another roster tidbit, came out of the Tigers’ camp on Tuesday: #Tigers announce Porcello will be the 5th starter, Smyly will be in the bullpen; Matt Tuiasosopo has made team, barring something unforseen — Matthew B. Mowery (@matthewbmowery) March 26, 2013 The slugging Tuiasosopo has enjoyed an impressive spring, thus far batting .327 with four homers and 10 RBI. He will begin the season as a backup outfielder, possibly serving as the right-handed portion of a platoon in left with Andy Dirks. Tuiasosopo is a career .176 hitter in the majors, a number compiled over three brief stints with the Mariners. Porcello, meanwhile, was the subject of many trade rumors throughout the spring. But with Detroit unable to find the right offer for him, the young right-hander will stay a part of the Tigers’ rotation, with Smyly returning to the long-relief role he excelled in last season. That decision does leave Detroit with an all-righty rotation, something Jim Leyland had hoped to avoid. However, Porcello has been brilliant this spring, to the tune of a 4-1 record, 3.00 ERA, 21 strikeouts and zero walks over 24.0 innings.
