Found July 31, 2013 on Fox Sports:
The Kansas City Royals have acquired outfielder Justin Maxwell from the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher Kyle Smith in an attempt to upgrade their depth for the stretch run. Maxwell made his major league debut in 2007 for the Nationals. He has spent the past two seasons with the Astros. He's hitting just .241 with two homers and eight RBIs in 40 games this season, but that includes a .302 average against left-handed pitchers. The Royals already were trying to upgrade in right field, where David Lough has played well after Jeff Francoeur was waived earlier in the season. But the need for depth became more pressing when center fielder Lorenzo Cain hurt his left groin on Saturday. Smith is a 20-year-old right-hander who is 5-4 with a 2.89 ERA for Class-A Wilmington this season. He was a fourth-round pick of the Royals in the 2011 amateur draft.

Royals acquire OF Justin Maxwell; ignore hole at 2B

by John Viril— At least Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore did not sit on his hands. Right before the deadline, he acquired OF Justin Maxwell from the Houston Astros for High A Wilmington pitcher Kyle Smith. While this move seems exactly like the kind of “minor deal” I demanded he make, I must confess I am surprised Moore went after a right-handed outfield bat with pop rather...

WATCH: Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain robs home run

When you’re hot, you’re hot.  The Kansas City Royals have won 9 straight games, thanks to playing some of the most complete baseball since George Brett, Amos Otis, and Willie Wilson were stars.  Case in point as Lorenzo Cain robs Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe of a home run and makes it look easy (courtesy of MLB.com). Cain almost made it look routine, even the announcer...

Houston Astros Rookie Jonathan Villar a Regular Clepto on the Base Path

There is not a whole lot going on with the Houston Astros that is good these days. Management seems intent almost on making the team the living embodiment of the Charlie Sheen-led Cleveland Indians from the movie Major League. Show you skills that will one day require paying you and your shipped out of town! Good thing is the trade deadline is gone now and there is still some...

Astros' Norris scratched from start

Houston Astros pitcher Bud Norris has been scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles. The team declined to immediately provide a reason for the move, but the right-hander has been the topic of trade speculation. A team official said Norris had not been dealt yet. Royals beat Twins for ninth straight

James Shields watched Lorenzo Cain race back to the wall in left-center field, leap in the air and snatch Trevor Plouffe's drive away just before it landed in the bullpen. The Kansas City right-hander thrust his arms in the air, Royals relievers erupted in jubilation and Cain bounded back toward the dugout with no worries about a groin injury that had kept him on the bench earlier...

White Sox folding fast on Peavy talk

The Chicago White Sox have only the Houston Astros buffering them from the floor of the American League. With a roster lacking talent, depth or potential the White Sox were sellers when the season began. Yet it is July 30 and the White Sox are talking about building their team around 32-year-old Jake Peavy. Peavy is a fine pitcher when healthy. He no longer has the dominating stuff...

Royals climb above .500 with 7-2 victory over Twins

Take a good look at the standings Royals fans. After Tuesday’s 7-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins your club has a winning record on the morning of July’s final day for the first time in a decade. Ervin Santana delivered seven strong innings for his third straight victory since the All-Star break and — more encouraging — the Moose broke loose for two home runs. Mike Moustakas...

Royals-Mets Preview

The Kansas City Royals' current string of victories hasn't come against impressive competition, and Friday night's series opener against the New York Mets wouldn't appear to be much more difficult. They likely won't care if it means the team's longest winning streak in 19 years. Kansas City aims for its 10th straight victory as it plays in Citi Field for...
