Wil Myers won the national daily double Tuesday.

Myers was selected the minor league player of the year by both Baseball America and USA Today. That does not mean, however, that the outfielder/third baseman will be called up later this month by the Kansas City Royals.

Myers, 21, began the season hitting .343 with 13 home runs and 30 RBI in 35 games with Class AA Northwest Arkansas, which earned him a mid-May promotion to Class AAA Omaha. He hit .304 with 24 home runs and 79 RBI with Omaha.

His 37 home runs for the season ranked second in the minor leagues, one behind Darin Ruf of Class AA Reading in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Myers' 109 RBI ranked fourth in the minors.

Myers is the first Royals prospect to win the USA Today award. He becomes the third Kansas City farmhand to win the Baseball America award. The others were Tom Gordon (1988) and Alex Gordon (2006).

"For me, the biggest thing this year has been the confidence," Myers said. "I feel like every time I go to the plate, I'm going to get a hit or hit the ball hard somewhere."

Despite Myers' brilliant numbers, the Royals are reluctant to put him on the 40-man big league roster this September. He does not have to be protected on the major league roster until after next season.

Myers will come to spring training as a candidate to win a starting job, but he is unlikely to be promoted this month with Omaha in the Pacific Coast League playoffs. By leaving Myers in the minors, the Royals can protect another prospect who would have to be placed on the big-league roster in November or be exposed in the Rule 5 draft in December.
