Whereas free agent catcher Brian McCann is said to have the ability to get a $100-million contract from many teams not in Atlanta, CBS Sports.com’s baseball insider Jon Heyman believes that number “may be a bit ambitious.” Heyman reports, though, that “not many players should enjoy a better free agency” than McCann, who projects as one of the top free agents in all of baseball this offseason. Heyman notes that interested teams include the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Angels, Blue Jays, and White Sox. Any of these teams could afford the asking price, and among them, the Yankees are in the highest need of a catcher. The Yankees struggled all season to keep a healthy catcher behind the plate, and when they played, Yankee catchers hit a combined .213 with 8 HR and 44 RBI. McCann himself hit just .256, but he did smack 20 HR and drive in 57 runs in 102 games. He lost the first month and a half of the season to injury.
