Slugfest The Mariners managed to crush the ball early on and jump out to a lead, but the Boston bats got to Iwakuma and tallied five home runs en route to a game two victory. Boston 11, Seattle 8 When: 10:10 PM ET, Tuesday, July 9, 2013 Where: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington Temperature: 79° Umpires: Home – Jim Joyce, 1B – Cory Blaser, 2B – Jeff Nelson, 3B – Ed Hickox Attendance: 21072 The start could not have been better for Seattle. After dropping 11 runs on the Red Sox on Monday, the M’s continued their scoring trend in the first with a 2-run home run by Kendrys Morales. The red-hot offense has now hit a home run in 17 consecutive games. The Red Sox used an offensive outburst to overcome Seattle. (Ted S. Warren/Seattle PI) Two runs of support felt like a sure thing for All-Star Hisashi Iwakuma, who took the hill Tuesday night, but sometimes great pitchers don’t have their stuff. No, this was not as bad as the King giving up a seven-run lead in Anaheim, this was doomed from the beginning. The Red Sox went down 1-2-3 in the first inning, but that would be the last time that M’s pitchers would be able to do that. David Ortiz had quite the night, launching a second inning home run as one of his four hits, and he stole a base! In the bottom of the second, fans were able to see why Brad Miller is in the big leagues. With the bases loaded, Miller attacked a pitch up in the zone and drove it down the right field line. He took the pitch and turned on it, but didn’t try to hit a grand slam, a bases clearing double would do the trick. Despite the result Tuesday, Miller’s performance as the lead off man has been nothing short of fantastic despite the small sample size (a .435 OBP in leadoff spot). Back to the problem: the pitching performance on Tuesday. Every Red Sox player had a hit, while 7 players recorded an RBI. Blake Beavan eventually finished with the loss, giving up 2 runs in 2 innings; it was Beavan’s first appearance in over a week. It was nice to see the old Beavan back, cursing at a Jackie Bradley Jr HR in the 5th. The question haunting any and all M’s fans right now, is Iwakuma out of gas or slowing down? The last time that Seattle had multiple All-Stars, the other two fell apart quickly and are no longer on the team. Everyone remembers Brandon League and Michael Pineda; one of them just lost another closing job in LA, while the other hasn’t pitched in 2 years. I am not suggesting that Iwakuma is like these other pitchers, but one has to wonder if the league is starting to come around. This guy had the best ERA in baseball over the course of a calendar year. Hopefully, Iwakuma gets right back on the horse and this is never discussed again. The Mariners had a chance to go over .500 at home last night, but alas and alack, their home record is now 22-23. CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE MARINERS BLOG IN OUR CLUBHOUSE TODAY AT NWSB!
