For years Ryan Zimmerman never needed to overcome a baseball season. He drew comparisons to Brooks Robinson clobbered around 25 homers a year and earned a $100 million contract. He had nothing to endure. He existed easily in a hard game until this season. His throwing mechanics broke down his bat lost power and his confidence eroded. He wondered at one point if he may need to switch to first base. “A lot of bad things creep in there” Zimmerman said. Zimmerman discovered this season he can persevere. Wednesday night he lifted the Washington Nationals to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets. As Dan Haren rebounded from an abysmal stretch Zimmerman blasted a solo homer and made two sparkling plays at third base. Like the team he represents Zimmerman’s underwhelming season has roared suddenly to life. On Sept. 1 Zimmerman had hit 15 home runs. He insisted a hot stretch would surface and his power would return. In the past nine games he has smashed seven homers bringing his total to 2...

Haren, Zimmerman, Nats top Mets for 5th win in row

Dan Haren pitched one-hit ball for six innings, Ryan Zimmerman homered and the Washington Nationals won their fifth straight game, beating the New York Mets 3-0 on Wednesday in a night full of 9/11 tributes. Mets manager Terry Collins wore an NYPD hat during batting practice, and there were several remembrances on the field, on the scoreboard and over the public-address system of...

Zimmerman, Nat pound Mets 7-2 for 4-game sweep

Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and Wilson Ramos homered off Aaron Harang in his Mets debut, and the Washington Nationals beat New York 7-2 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep. Anthony Rendon also connected for Washington, which outhomered the Mets 13-0 in a series that helped the Nationals remain on the fringe of the NL wild-card race. They moved within 5 1/2 games of idle Cincinnati...

Update: Bryce Harper can't talk about his injury, but should play today

Yesterday, we pointed out that Bryce Harper has no structural damage in his knee and is expected to be able to play after sitting out a couple games.  What isn't clear is exactly how serious the inflammation in his knee was and when Davey Johnson will let him back into the lineup.  Things got even more murky yesterday when Harper revealed that he was not allowed to speak...

Ross Detwiler completes bullpen session, still hoping to return to Nationals in 2013

There are less than three weeks left in the regular season, but Washington Nationals pitcher Ross Detwiler is still putting his best efforts in to making an appearance for the team before the season is over. According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, Detwiler threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon before the Nationals' game at Citi Field and came out of it pain-free...

Watch all 21 hits of Denard Span's 21-game hitting streak

Wait, Denard Span has a 21-game hitting streak? When did that happen? Indeed, see video evidence above of all 21 hits (despite the title of the video, there are 21 hits included, not 20). Nats keep rolling, just six back in the Wild Card chase with 18 to play. Probably not the best idea to be selling postseason tickets yet, but at least there's still hope. (Screencap...

Brandon Douglas scores. Jerolomon is not even mentioned. If you have seen the play -- based on recent YouTube statistics Johnson's grounder...

Werth, Nationals continue surge with 6-3 win over Mets

The apprehension that once surrounded Jayson Werth has been swallowed whole by possibility. Back in the spring the Washington Nationals may have worried about the condition of his left wrist the natural aging process and the possibility his contract would become unbearable. As summer cedes to fall Werth could win a batting title land in the top five of an MVP vote or maybe even put...
