Philadelphia Phillies Catcher Carlos Ruiz

The 2012 season has been a breakout year offensively for the Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz. In 95 games, Ruiz has set career highs in home runs 14, RBI 58 and batting average, .335. We could easily say that he is the Phillies offensive player of the year, despite being on the disabled list.  Ruiz is not expected to return to the Phillies lineup until mid-September. Manager Charlie Manuel has said he will exercise caution, as he is concerned with a relapse. If Ruben Amaro is doing any planning for the future, shelving Ruiz for the remainder of the year should be part of this.

The Phillies have huge needs for next year and the starting catcher position should not be one of them. The Phillies who have a $5 million option on Ruiz next season will without a doubt exercise that option. At $5 Million, Ruiz is coming cheap and at 33, 2013 could be his last in a Phillies uniform.

Taking the option on Ruiz and trading him? Amaro believes the Phillies can contend next year so trading Ruiz is doubtful. These are the words coming from Amaro but looking at the current team it is hard to imagine the Phillies returning to glory. In a league with very few good hitting catchers should Amaro roll the dice and look for a deal moving Ruiz? If it were a blockbuster, I would make that move as Ruiz’s years behind the plate are few. Anything short of a blockbuster, the Phillies have one year to find his replacement.Similar Posts:
