Smells like misery

That rancid smell wafting towards your nostrils? Yes, that’s the new “New York Yankees” fragrances for him and her that are on sale at Yankee Stadium and Macy’s starting this month. Pardon me…just threw up a little bit in my mouth. No, we’re not kidding. As if we needed to be exposed to the Yankees brand anymore. It’s really hard to speak about.

I first saw this while riding the subway home from work this evening. My first take was that it was a brilliant marketing campaign aimed only at promoting the Yankees and driving tune-in. I searched for the fine print looking for a logo or hidden tagline that might hint that this communication was brought to my eyes by the New York Yankees, YES Network or even someone like Modell’s. I mean THIS could not be serious, right?

Like I need another kick in the balls on the subway ride home?

Apparently, it’s quite serious. The worst part? It’s going to sell. It’s going to do very well. It’s a no-brainer move for the Yanks. I can already imagine it sitting in bathroom medicine cabinets around the world, right next to the economy-sized tub of super-mega-hold hair gel. These guys will no doubt bathe in the “fresh, woody scent introduces an invigorating blend of sparkling Bergamot, Coriander and cool Blue Sage.” I already envision to the target consumer.

Thanks for adding another reason to hate you, New York Yankees. Personally, I’d rather douse myself in this scent.
