With a new month comes a look back at the last. While doing research to find the minor league player of the month, there were several players who had very solid months. Let’s take a look at the runners-up first. Adron Chambers had  a very solid month of July, that may have been part of the reason for his July 31st call up to the big leagues. Chambers will take the spot of Shane Robinson in the Cardinals’ outfield rotation. Chambers hit .354 in July, with 4 home runs, 16 runs batted in, 4 doubles, a triple, 17 runs scored, and 7 stolen bases. If this were an ordinary month, Chambers would probably have won the award. Another strong candidate who was recently promoted is Mike O’Neill. As part of the Chambers’ series of moves, O’Neill was promoted to Triple-A Memphis on July 31st to take Chambers’ spot in the outfield. In July O’Neill hit .315 with 15 runs batted in, 18 runs scored, 8 stolen bases, and a .426 on base percentage. O’Neill went 2-for-4 with a run scored in his Triple-A debut. David Popkins continues his solid play with an all around solid month of July. For Palm Beach, Popkins hit .327 with 3 home runs, 17 runs batted in, and 15 runs. Since June 1st, Popkins has been one of the most consistent hitters in the Cardinals organization with a .367 batting average and 6 home runs. There were a couple of players who displayed big power numbers in July. David Washington of the State College Spikes had 6 home runs and 27 runs batted in while hitting .306 in July. Washington should probably be with Peoria if it werent for off-field problems early in the season. The Minor League Player of the Month This month’s award goes to the Palm Beach Cardinals’ first baseman Jonathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez hit .382 with 6 home runs and 28 runs batted in. He also scored 12 runs and stole three bases. The 23-year-old Rodriguez was the Cardinals 17th round pick in 2009 out of Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Florida. Rodriguez is in his second season at Palm Beach, but last year he was limited due to injuries. He only played in 64 games for Palm Beach in 2012. I would expect to see Rodriguez in a Springfield Cardinals uniform before the end of this season.
