The first and second rounds of the Major League Baseball draft were held on Thursday and the St. Louis Cardinals had two picks in the first round. The Cardinals had the 19th pick and the 28th pick. The 28th pick comes to the Cardinals via the Milwaukee Brewers because the Brewers signed Kyle Lohse after Lohse rejected a tender offer by the Cardinals. With the 19th pick in the Major League Baseball draft on Thursday, the Cardinals selected Marco Gonzales out of Gonzaga University. Gonzales was a two-way player for Gonzaga, but excelled on the mound. Gonzales is one of the more polished pitchers in the draft and could be a fast mover in the system like Michael Wacha. The scouting report on Gonzales is that his fastball can hit low 90′s but his best pitch is his change-up. There is somewhat of a need of left handed pitching in the Cardinals organization and it is no surprise they went the college route with the first pick. Gonzales is 6’1″ 185 lbs and is 21 years old. What does the future hold for Gonzales in the Cardinals organization? I would not be surprised to see the Cardinals take it easy with Gonzales this year like they did with Michael Wacha. Gonzales hasn’t thrown as much as Wacha did but the Cards don’t want to over-due it. I think Gonzalez will start with Palm Beach when he gets a full season assignment. So what does the 28th pick look like? Look for the Cardinals to go the high school route with that pick. If Travis Demeritte is there, that is where will they will go. If he is not there, look for a prep pitcher, maybe Devin Williams of Hazelwood West.
