The Pirates made a few more cuts this morning, including sending the scorching-hot Starling Marte down to minor league camp even though he's 13-for-25 with three homers this spring. Gorkys Hernandez, Kyle McPherson, Bryan Morris, and Justin Wilson all went down with him. There aren't really any surprises in that group; of the quintet that went down today Wilson was really the only one that I thought had any shot at all of making the big league roster and his demotion is certainly understandable if the team is still thinking of him as a starter long-term. When Marte went on his consecutive hit streak earlier in the spring and some people started to get excited about him, I commented on Twitter that even if he hit .900 all spring, I'd want to see him in Indianapolis to start the season. That's not a knock on Marte; I just think that he's still got work to do. I think there might be an occasionaly player that warrants a Double-A to the big leagues jump, but Marte...

Rays 2, Pirates 1

The Bucs (and their modified St. Patrick’s Day lineup complete with green hats)  fell to the Rays this afternoon. At the plate: Andrew McCutchen hit a solo homer. Starling Marte picked up yet another hit to bump his average above .500. It was a bunt single. On the mound:  Jeff Karstens pitched well, going five innings and allowing just one run on a solo shot. He walked three...

Twins 10, Pirates 0

Well, I’d say the Twins got sufficient revenge from the beatdown the other day in Fort Myers. At the plate: The Pirates were hitless until the eighth inning. Brandon Boggs broke up the impending no-no with a single, and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Twins starter Francisco Liriano struck out six in five innings. On the mound: Charlie Morton had a rough day...

Pirates prospect interview: Gerrit Cole

Pirates number one draft pick Gerrit Cole took the mound, and was easily the big draw at minor league camp on Tuesday. As a small crowd viewed the 2.5 inning simulated game, mostly focusing on Cole. The right-hander was topping out at 98 MPH, and flashing a 91 MPH slider.'s George Von Benko caught up with Cole.

A late ninth-inning rally by the Phils comes up a run short as they lose to the Pirates, 3-2.
