Final: Pirates 5, Astros 3 WP: A.J. Burnett (12-3, 3.52 ERA) LP: Dallas Keuchel (1-3, 4.63 ERA) SV: Joel Hanrahan (30, 2.23 ERA) Starling Marte‘s career couldn’t have started off any better. Making his Major League debut, leading off in left field, Marte homered to left center field on the very first pitch he ever saw in the big leagues. That was just the beginning of what would become a two-inning barrage by the Bucs. Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer later in the first inning and Clint Barmes hit a two-run shot in the second. That would be all the Pirates would score, but it was more than enough as A.J. Burnett rolled through the Astros’ lineup, picking up his 12th win of the season. The Astros hit two homers off Burnett in the eighth, and he exited with only those two runs given up over 7 1/3 innings. Brad Lincoln got the final two outs of the frame before giving way to Joel Hanrahan, who recorded his 30th save. Hanrahan did give up a run on a single, a walk, and two wild pitches...

First Pitch: Why I Don’t Think the Pirates Are Done After Marte Promotion

After it was announced that Starling Marte would be promoted tomorrow, I started getting the following question on Twitter: Do you think the Pirates will make any more moves now that Starling Marte is up? My answer: yes. My reasoning: look at the pitching. The pitching staff has been strong this year. Not only has it been strong, but it has depth. Jeff Locke, Justin Wilson, and previously...

It’s Starling Marte Time: What to Love and What to Fear

Starling Marte will arrive tomorrow. We can put the #FreeStarlingMarte hash tags away. Mission accomplished. I’ve been saying one thing about Marte since his hot streak at the end of June: let’s be patient. Everyone wanted to call him up after he exploded for nine games at the end of June. My stance on July 1st: give him a month to see if he was legit, and to make sure this wasn’t...

Starling Marte hits HR on first MLB pitch

Starling Marte – One Pitch and Gone!(Photo: deadspin.com) Welcome to the Majors, Starling Marte! The Pittsburgh Pirates organization and its fans have been anxiously awaiting the Major League arrival of their prospect who hails from the Dominican Republic. Starling Marte wasted little time in showing his talents. While making his debut against the Houston Astros, Marte led off...

Pirates prospect Marte goes yard in first MLB at-bat

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 14 games over .500. It’s almost August. A.J. Burnett is now 12-3. They sit just two back of the Reds in the NL Central. Andrew McCutchen is a franchise player and MVP candidate. Can things get any better for the Bucos? Wait, is this happening? The answers to both those questions may be yes. Starling Marte seems to symbolize that hope and optimism. Marte...

Pirates Notebook: Marte Impressive in Debut; Jones Hitting Lefties

Starling Marte was impressive in his Major League debut. Manager Clint Hurdle always gives the same message to rookies when they first arrive to the big leagues — respect everything and fear nothing. The message must have resonated with the 23-year-old Startling Marte in his Major League debut on Thursday in Houston. Because that’s exactly what he did. The outfielder stepped...

Here Comes The Marte

Well the word is out, Starling Marte will meet the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club in Houston.  A promotion!  He is free. Soooooooooo Thanks Chris. Anyway. It was bound to happen. I still think it is the wrong move to make. Marte has been good, not great at Triple A. The reasons why for and against [...]

Marte to Make Debut; Hernandez Optioned

The Pittsburgh Pirates made several moves on Thursday. They optioned outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis. Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was added to the 25-man roster. Rodriguez was acquired from the Houston Astros on Saturday night in exchange for three prospects. His next scheduled start is TBA. Rodriguez last started on Monday. Prospect Starling Marte was also officially...

The great prognosticator that is first at-bat success

As you no doubt heard, read or saw, Pirates top prospect Starling Marte homered on the very first pitch he ever saw as a major leaguer.  This, of course, means he will be the greatest player ever.  Don't believe me?  Let's compare the Hall of Fame-bound Marte to the other young stud hitters that have been taking the league by storm this season. First we have wunderkind...

Video: Pirates prospect Starling Marte hits HR on first pitch of Major League debut

Coming into tonight’s game against the Houston Astros the Pittsburgh Pirates had received minimal production from the leadoff spot in their lineup. For the season the top spot had produced just a .217 batting average and .264 on-base percentage. Left field has also been a problem offensively for the current NL wild card [...]

Starling shines in debut

Starling Marte hit the first major league pitch he saw over the left center field wall.  It’s hard to get much more exciting than that, but the Pirates tried with another excellent start from AJ Burnett, 2 more homeruns, and a 5-3 win over the Astros. AJ Burnett didn’t give up a hit until the [...]

Good First Impressions

Two highly touted prospects made their major league debuts this week, and both made excellent first impressions. Pitcher Matt Harvey struck out eleven Diamondbacks in 5-1/3 innings in the Mets 3-1 victory, and in doing so set a new team record for strikeouts by a starting pitcher in his first MLB start (the previous record of eight was shared by Hall of Famer Tom...

MLB Insiders: Houston Astros

The Pirates open a four-game series in Houston on Thursday night. Right-hander A. J. Burnett will be on the mound for the Bucs. Houston will start lefty Dallas Keuchel.

Friday Trade Rumors: Headley, Hanrahan

- Jayson Stark writes that the Pirates are among four teams that are aggressively pursuing Padres 3B Chase Headley, but does add that they are less motivated to make a deal at the current moment than they were before. Headley might be the best available hitter in this year’s deadline. His .267/.359/.428 line may not seem all that great, but his .277/.374/.497 road splits are. Keep...

Pittsburgh Pirates Run for 81: Magic Number is 25!

That's right America. You may have to wait another Halloween to see me dressed up in the Pittsburgh Pirates Parrot costume that I so brazenly said I would rock if the Pittsburgh Pirates did NOT win 81 games this year. Most of you laughed. Some of you didn't care. A few of you wanted me to check into a hospital to care for those with delusional thinking. Ha...
