Dan Straily pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Oakland Athletics edge the Houston Astros 2-1 on Saturday.
Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie homered as the A's won for the seventh time in nine games to remain on top of the AL West. They began the day with a half-game lead over Texas.
Straily (9-7) allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked one in his third consecutive victory. The right-hander has a 1.50 ERA over 18 innings during his winning streak.
Dan Otero allowed a run in the eighth, but Sean Doolittle got four outs for his first save in four chances, completing the five-hitter.
Brandon Barnes had a run-scoring fielder's choice for Houston's only run. The major league-worst Astros have dropped nine of 12.
Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer (4-2) pitched six stellar innings, allowing one run and seven hits.
Straily retired his last nine hitters and 12 of his final 13 batters. He allowed one runner to reach third and he was stranded when Jonathan Villar was thrown out at second by Cespedes trying to stretch his single.
Matt Dominguez doubled to lead off the fifth but Straily struck out Chris Carter and Brett Wallace, and Matt Pagnozzi grounded out to shortstop.
Oberholtzer gave up Cespedes' 22nd homer leading off the fourth. After Nate Freiman singled, Oberholtzer retired nine of his final 11 hitters.
Lowrie hit a two-out home run in the seventh against Josh Zeid.
Wallace doubled with one out against Otero and eventually scored on Barnes' slow grounder to the pitcher.

Daric Barton was once a top prospect. He was drafted in the first round in 2003 by the St. Louis Cardinals and then traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2004. Billy Beane was excited to acquire him, and was looking forward to seeing his potential. From 2005 to 2007, Barton was ranked in Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects and was the Athletics #1 and #2 top prospect...
Some faulty baserunning by the A's ensured Saturday's game remained a tight affair but it was no sweat for Dan Straily.
The rookie worked seven scoreless innings in Oakland's 2-1 victory over Houston helping move the A's a full game ahead of Texas in the AL West; the Rangers played later at Anaheim. The A's have won seven of their past nine games.
The Oakland A’s bats came alive again tonight as the A’s downed the Houston Astros to jump back into first place. Starting pitcher AJ Griffin put up a so-so start against the lowly Astros but da swinging A’s made sure they would not lose a second straight game against the worst team in baseball. Tonight’s win and the Texas Rangers loss to the Los Angeles Angels, gives...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In June, Oakland Athletics pitcher Ryan Cook caught Nick LeGrande's pitch from 1,800 miles away. In October, someone, somewhere, is about to catch a little piece of his heart.
"They'll be part of my family," Mike LeGrande says of the anonymous individual slated to donate live-saving bone marrow to his son. "There are no 'ifs' or...
Before the Oakland Athletics can activate outfielder Josh Reddick from the disabled list, he has to prove he can make it through batting practice without issue. He's expected to have an opportunity to do just that later this week or early next week, meaning he could be in line to be activated on Tuesday when he becomes eligible, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.
The Oakland Athletics are in sole possession of first place in the AL West for the first time in more than a month.
It's just not that big of a deal to Josh Donaldson.
Donaldson had three hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning, and the A's beat the Houston Astros 7-5 on Friday night to jump ahead of Texas in the division.
Jed Lowrie added two hits and two...
On Saturday afternoon, just a day after saying he would “monitor” the closer situation, manager Bob Melvin called on Sean Doolittle not Grant Balfour to lock down the ninth inning.
The manager was resting his usual closer simply because Balfour had thrown 35 pitches on Friday night. Although before that outing he hadn’t thrown in three days. On Sunday, before the Oakland A’s...
Dan Straily (8-7, 4.38 ERA) gets the nod as the Oakland A’s (81-60, .574) look to take game three of the series against the Houston Astros, and to build upon their half game lead in the AL West.
The second-year pitcher has won each of his last two starts, and on both occasions Kurt Suzuki was behind the plate. The veteran catcher once again gets the start with the Straily on the...
Josh Donaldson isn't known as a speed and power guy. Power yes. Speed? Just enough to get by.
For the first time since Aug. 6 the A's are alone in first place in the American League West because Donaldson showed off both his strength and hustle Friday night. He helped manufacture a tie-breaking run with his fourth steal and iced a 7-5 victory with his 21st homer.
Bartolo Colon won for the first time in more than a month, Seth Smith homered during a seven-run third inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Houston Astros 7-2 on Sunday.
Brandon Moss had three hits and drove in two runs while Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and an RBI for the AL West-leading A's.

Behind a stellar outing from Dan Straily (9-7, 4.15 ERA), and a pair of bombs from Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie, the Oakland A’s knocked off the Houston Astros 2-1.
The A’s are now a season-high 22-games over .500 as they improve to 82-60 (.577) and hold a one-game lead over the Texas Rangers, who take on the Los Angeles Angels at 6:05p.m. at Angel Stadium.

In the sixth inning, Josh Donaldson ambushed Philip Humber as he unloaded on a first-pitch breaking ball that didn’t quite break.
“I only had one other at-bat against the guy and he threw me a first pitch breaking ball and I hit it back to the pitcher,” said Donaldson after the game. “So, I had a pretty good idea I was going to get something off-speed right there.”
