PLAYERS: Matt Moore
TEAMS: Tampa Bay Rays
The best teams in baseball that have success on a consistent basis seem to have one thing in common, and that is they have a strong pitching staff. The Tampa Bay Rays are one of these teams that always receive great contributions from their pitchers. This is one of the reasons that in past couple of seasons, they either have a great chance of winning their division or earning a wild card berth. They have a pitcher that is having a spectacular season for them. The one pitcher that comes to mind when you think of the Rays is David Price. That would make sense, but Price has battled injuries this season. The pitcher that has stepped up in his absence is talented left-hander Matt Moore. This is only his second full season in baseball, but you would not know that by the way he is carving up the opposition. The opposition is having a tough time figuring him out, as indicated by their .178 batting average against him. He also has a 2.18 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and has an 8-0 record in 62 innings t...

Matt Moore, Finished or Unfinished

Matt Moore was a tippy-top pitching prospect, and like all tippy-top pitching prospects, he was supposed to become an ace. Based on his current sub-3 ERA and number of strikeouts, he’s arrived at a young age. Based on the rest of the picture, Moore remains at least partially unfinished, as he continues to struggle with command consistency. But that’s “unfinished,” relative...

Rays outfielder Sam Fuld triples off ball boy

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Sam Fuld hit an unusual triple in the fourth inning of Sunday's game after it ricocheted off a Cleveland Indians ball boy in right field who couldn't get himself out of the way. Fuld hit a fair ball up the right field line which likely would have been a double anyway. However, the ball bounced off the low wall in front of the stands and hit...

Price will not return until end of June

A couple weeks back, manager Joe Maddon said the Rays would be cautious bringing starting pitcher David Price back from the D.L. Today, talking on 620 WDAE’s Ron & Ian Show (interview’s at the end of this post), pitching coach Jim Hickey said that Price may not return until the end of June. However, the team is monitoring him closely and Hickey stated Price is doing good...

State of the Rays: Tampa Bay's bats heat up in May

For the Tampa Bay Rays, May was a month of an offensive awakening. It seems odd to consider now, but there was a time in April, particularly during a nine-game road trip to Texas and Boston and Baltimore, when there was concern about how the Rays would produce enough to stay competitive. At the time, newcomers such as James Loney and Yunel Escobar hit below .200 with an on-base percentage...

Evan Longoria fourth among AL 3B in All-Star balloting

Evan Longoria is one of the American League's top All-Star Game vote-getters. The Tampa Bay Rays' third baseman, with 454,047 votes, ranks fourth in AL All-Star Game balloting at his position in the first update released Monday. The Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera (1,500,165 votes), Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado (723,943) and Texas Rangers' Adrian Beltre (600...

Former bust busts a move, scores

Not all that long ago, the Tampa Bay Rays made Tim Beckham the No. 1 pick of the MLB Draft. And even more not all that long ago, he now-23-year-old's off-the-field actions made him seem almost destined to join the growing list of Rays prospects to flame out -- gloriously . But if the No. 1 pick of the 2008 draft keeps showing the moves he showed on Friday night, perhaps the...

Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore, who is tied for the American League lead in wins, will make his next start Tuesday against Detroit. Moore (8-0) started Friday night against Cleveland but didn't return after pitching the first inning because of the game's third rain delay, which lasted 2 hours and 39 minutes. Rays manager Joe Maddon said Moore could have started Sunday...

Rays-Tigers Preview

Thanks to a decision by Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, the pitcher that has been toughest to hit in baseball will get a chance to face the hitter with the best average. Matt Moore will try to improve to 9-0 as he faces Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Maddon could have used Moore on Sunday in Cleveland...

Weekend Recap: Bizarro-Tribe Drops Two to Rays

The Indians lost two of three to Tampa Bay Rays this weekend, which really isn’t all that interesting until you stop to notice exactly how they went about it. We should have known that strange times were in store on Friday evening when, after being delayed by two hours, the Indians allowed the game to begin before succumbing to a second rain delay just ten minutes later.  Perhaps...

Tigers 10, Rays 1
