According to multiple reports on Twitter this morning the Tampa Bay Rays have signed Jack Cust to a rookie contract and have invited him to camp. Cust, 34, will likely compete for a DH position with the team and could potentially add some much needed power to the lineup if he can regain his form from 2007 through 2009 while a member of the Oakland Athletics. Cust has bounced around the major leagues, playing with six teams during his career. He was a member of the A’s for the longest period of time, four years, and spent time as a member of the Seattle Mariners in 2011 while appearing in just 67 games. Seattle released him after he hit just three home runs and batted just .213. Cust appeared on the rosters of three teams last season, the Houston Astros, New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays but saw no major league action. He possesses a large frame at 6-foot-one inch 250 pounds. Cust throws right handed but bats from the left side of the plate. From 2007-2009, Cust recorded 84 home runs and drove in 229 runs for the A’s His best season came in 2008 when he tagged 33 round trippers. This is a low risk, high-reward style of move the Rays and manager Joe Maddon are famous for. If he can regain his form, he could prove to be a valuable piece of the puzzle for the Rays moving forward in 2013. Rays to give away funny Maddon bobbleheads

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays released their promotional schedule for the upcoming season. One thing to keep in mind here is that the Rays ranked dead last in attendance last year, so any added incentive to lure fans to Tropicana Field is a plus.I suppose this is what drove the team to develop the Joe Maddon Gnome Bobblehead. It features the Tampa Bay skipper in his signature black...

Joe Maddon Garden Gnome, David Price’s Dog Among Tampa Bay Rays’ Bobbleheads for 2013 (Photos)

For years, Tampa Bay has had trouble attracting fans to Tropicana Field. The franchise tried changing the team name (from Devil Rays to Rays) and fielding a winning team (playoffs in three of the last five years, including an American League pennant). With those methods still not boosting attendance all that much, though, it’s time for bobbleheads. While the Rays have their usual...

Tampa Bay Rays to give away Joe Maddon gnome

The Tampa Bay Rays released their promotional schedule recently and one of the more interesting giveaways is a Joe Maddon gnome. “It’s somewhat overwhelming to be characterized in gnomedom like that. It’s really difficult to describe that feeling that someone has at that moment. I’m pleased, I’m honored, I’m humbled by the entire event. And hopefully I won’t scare too...

Joel Peralta Won’t Pitch in World Baseball Classic Because of Sandwich-Related Neck Injury

Joel Peralta‘s hunger really got the best of him. Peralta won’t be able to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic because of a neck injury he suffered while getting out of his car to buy sandwiches. Wil Myers offers intriguing first glimpse

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Everything about Wil Myers spring will be a flash of light, a fleeting glimpse. Thats the way with hype, after all. Luke Scott shows off his latest kill, a boar’s head

Luke Scott is a gun-toting American. We know that from his previous outbursts. Scott is a little more reserved now when it comes to that kind of stuff. But, oh boy, does he still like to show off his recent kills: #Rays Luke Scott was showing off a boar’s head from a spear-hunting trip today. Our @gary_shelton is writing about it… — Marc Topkin ...

Relievers by pitch value - Craig Kimbrel is the bomb

I took a look yesterday at qualifying starting pitchers using PitchF/X pitch values to find the top ten and bottom ten values using repertoire as criteria. In other words, if you put together the value of all their pitches, which pitcher had the deadliest set of pitches. Kershaw came out on top with Verlander a close second. Nova came in dead last among the 85 qualifiers with Ricky...
