Delmon Young was released by the Philadelphia Phillies this week and he’s reportedly close to signing with the Tampa Bay Rays. Should the Detroit Tigers swoop in? Young, of course, was a huge piece in the Tigers’ last two playoff runs after coming over from Minnesota in 2011. He hit eight home runs over the past two postseasons, while batting .354 in the 2012 ALCS and World Series. Detroit may have a need in left field, too, with Matt Tuiasosopo cooling off rapidly and Andy Dirks continuing to struggle. So, how about a reunion with Young? Chris Burke: Since this roundtable was my idea, I’m all for it. Young’s bat is an upgrade for the rest of the year over Tuiasosopo (even though Young is only batting .261 with a .302 OBP). The Tigers know that he’ll produce come September and October, which is more than they can say for Young, Tuiasosopo or even Nick Castellanos. The downside here is in the field — Young would have to play left, after DH’ing for most of last season. Against lefties, the Tigers can get away with that to add an extra bat. Max DeMara: No. Instead of Delmon Young, who wore out his welcome in Detroit last season, the Tigers should go with an internal option like Castellanos, a player who could infuse new life and excitement into the team and the position. While Young could provide the lineup with a tiny bit of extra pop, there’s no reason the Tigers couldn’t make a smaller move before the August 31 deadline for a bat if they’re truly bent on fixing the left field spot externally. Andrew Tomlinson: Absolutely not. While the Tigers clearly need someone better to hit in the six spot, that could easily be fixed my simply adjusting the lineup a bit. Delmon has consistently trended down over the last few years with his only glimpse of success coming in the ALCS. The Tigers have other internal options to fix left, like Nick Castellanos, that should be looked at before putting Delmon and his terrible defense back in the field.
