After locking down their top three picks, the Cardinals turned to high upside draft picks to lock down. Part of the Cardinals’ draft strategy was to save money by selecting college seniors and to use those savings on high upside high school players. The Cardinals’ signed their 5th round pick, Ian McKinney out of Boone High School in Orlando, for $303,300 according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. McKinney, a left-handed pitcher, is 5’11″ 185 lbs, similar to Cards’ first round pick Rob Kaminsky, but McKinney doesn’t throw as hard and many scouts believe he will end up in the bullpen. The Cardinals’ signed McKinney for the exact recommended slot amount. McKinney was committed to play baseball at the University of Central Florida. Also, according to Ben Nicholson – Smith of Sportsnet.ca, the Cardinals have inked a deal with 11th round pick Malik Collymore of Port Credit SS in Canada. Collymore was a University of Missouri recruit for baseball and a high upside pick. Collymore is a shortstop with great athletic ability and has a good power/speed combo. At 5’11″ 190 lbs, many scouts believe that he will likely move to second base or the outfield. The scouting report also says that he gets high marks for his hustle on the field and his makeup. Collymore’s bonus was for $275,000 which is about $140,000 over the recommended slot bonus for the Cardinals 10th round pick. In Other News Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting the Cardinals have signed 3rd round pick Mike Mayers, a RHP from Ole Miss. Hummel states that Mayers will be assigned to the Gulf Coast Cardinals and his bonus will be slightly north of $500,000.  The recommended slot amount for Mayers’ is $557,900, so we will see if the Cardinals will have savings from that pick. The Cardinals have also signed 7th round pick Chris Rivera, out of El Dorado HS in CA and Andrew Pierce, out of Southern Mississippi, but their bonuses have yet to be announced. It is believed the Cardinals may have to go over slot on Rivera and under slot on Pierce. Nick Petree, the Cardinals 9th round pick has also signed, but his bonus has yet to be announced, and like Pierce, the Cardinals should save money towards their pool amount. The Cardinals only have one pick in their first 10 rounds that has not been signed, Mason Katz out of LSU. Katz, the 4th round pick, cannot sign a professional contract until he is finished with his college career, and LSU is in the College World Series.   Related articles The St. Louis Cardinals sign First Round Pick Marco Gonzales Cardinals ink deals with Rob Kaminsky and Oscar Mercado
