Over the last decade, sabermetricians (a term loosely used to describe people who use advanced statistics to measure past and future performance) have become all the rage. What once was a hobby of a certain slice of baseball fandom, is now a tool utilized by just about every front office in baseball. In the evolution of statistics, the key sabermetric stat is WAR (wins above replacement). WAR started gaining even more national attention last fall during the heated Miguel Cabrera vs. Mike Trout for MVP debate. WAR favored Trout, while the more traditional counting stats (HR, RBI, etc.) favored Cabrera. It’s not the best statistic for measuring each phase of the game, but it is a catch all that attempts to encapsulate hitting, defense, and baserunning. WAR is now often sited when discussing a player’s overall value, as it allows a quick (and slightly inaccurate) comparison amongst a group of players. Further compounding the issues with WAR was the problem that there were two different WARs commonly being used. Fangraphs had their version (often referred to as fWAR), and Baseball Reference had their own (rWAR). Each used different variables within their formula, thus producing different results.
