The New York Yankees since the trade of Jesus Montero have been making and receiving calls regarding their DH position. With only 20 days till spring training there are still many free agents without a job.Yankee general manager Brian Cashman has reached out to the agents of Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. Both players were well liked in the clubhouse, fan favorites and aren’t strangers to the craziness that is New York.Damon, last season, played 152 games with the Tampa Bay Rays, mostly at DH, and hit .261 with 16 homers and 73 RBIs. Johnny has 2723 career hits and has made no secret that he would like to play till he reached the 3,000 milestone. Being a left handed hitter Damon was used mostly against righties, but had a better batting average against lefties. The Yankees re-signed Andruw Jones (a right handed hitter) as a backup outfielder and DH against lefties, so Damon could complement him from the left side.Matsui, another left handed hitter, played 141 games last year with t...

Seattle Mariners Hope Jesus Montero Can Get Good Enough To One Day Sign With Yankees

SEATTLE—Introducing former Yankee farmhand Jesus Montero to the media Friday, the Seattle Mariners said they have high expectations for the newly acquired catching prospect, a player they hope will eventually become great enough to desert them for a...

Mariners getting closer to making Montero for Pineda trade official

The agent for Jesus Montero said the catcher is happy about the trade that will send him to the Mariners.

Player Profile #142: Jesus Montero | C | SEA

OK, so Jesus Montero‘s move to Safeco Field isn’t all bad. First off, he’s almost guaranteed to get 600 plate appearances and should bat in the heart of the Mariners lineup. Another plus is that he should gain catcher eligibility quicker in Seattle than he would have in New York. We all know how hard Seattle can be on a righties power numbers, but Montero should be able to...

Montero, Darvish, Perez, Colon: AL West Bullet Points for 1/18

1: I have to agree with Dave that Jesus Montero’s bat is likely to be an upgrade, but something short of hall-of-fame level. The list of players Dave compiled includes quite a few guys who were established in the majors at the age Montero is now. Focusing on college-drafted players gets you a pool that’s more similar age-wise, but it presents its own set of problems. This...

Rothschild: Pineda can can be ‘ace’ in future

TAMPA, Fla. — It’s not that Larry Rothschild isn’t sorry to see Jesus Montero go.The Yankees’ pitching coach knows the talent of the organization’s former top offensive prospect. But if they had to give Montero up for someone, he’s glad it’s Michael Pineda.“I’m...

Crasnick: Starting 9 -- Aging, unemployed hitters

Johnny Damon and Raul Ibanez among aging hitters who remain unemployed

Quick Hits: Red Sox, Gordon, Francis, Montero, Braves

Friday night links.. It appears that talks between the Rockies and Red Sox regarding Marco Scutaro are dormant, but Rob Bradford of writes that Boston's possible motivation for a move involving Scutaro would be to free up payroll.  The club has reportedly expressed interest in White Sox starter Gavin Floyd and free agent outfielder Cody Ross, but neither move...

More DH Options

I mentioned Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Vladimir Guerrero, and Jorge Vazquez on Saturday as possible options for the Yankees Designated Hitter position. Newsday’s Ken Davidoff adds Jack Cust and Raul Ibanez to the mix as their agents have contacted the Yankees. .bbpBox{background:url( #C0DEED;padding...

Jobless Johnny would be nice fit for Yanks

If Yankees are going to claim to be out of money, well, it’s hard to argue that $210 million or so shouldn’t be enough to win a championship. But considering his ballclub would have paid any price for a clutch hit last October, surely Brian Cashman can find a way to bring back Johnny Damon.
