The Phils’ pitching staff has another late inning meltdown as the team loses their third straight game to the Pirates, 6-4. The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Dom Brown hits an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had started the inning off with a walk, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Pirates tied the game up at one-all in the top of the sixth as Gaby Sanchez hits a lead-off home run, his third home run of the year. The Phils retook the lead in their half of the sixth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, knocking in Kevin Frandsen, who had started the inning off with a walk, then went to third on Utley’s single, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead, while sending Utley, who earlier singled, then stole second base, on to third base. Two batters later, after Utley is thrown out at the plate, 5-2, on John Mayberry, Jr.’s fielder’s choice grounder to third baseman Pedro Alvarez, for the inning’s...

First Pitch: What to do About Jonathan Sanchez in the Short-Term?

Jonathan Sanchez has at least one more start before Francisco Liriano returns. Photo credit: David Hague Francisco Liriano had a great start on Thursday. He threw five innings for Indianapolis, allowing one run on four hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts. Jonathan Sanchez didn’t have a good start on Friday. He was ejected from his start after allowing two homers in the first...

Draft Prospect Watch: Could Pirates Be Interested In Ian Clarkin Or Ryan Boldt?

The 11th weekend of college baseball finished up today, as we focus on the college bats, a couple HS players and some former Pirates draft picks who will go high this year. Check out the draft preview posted here and the recap of the tenth week’s action here. Just a reminder, the Pirates pick #9 and #14 in this year’s June amateur draft, so for the duration of the college season...

Pirates pitcher Sanchez suspended six games for beaning

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jonathan Sanchez has been suspended for six games by Major League Baseball after he hit Allen Craig with a pitch in Friday’s loss to St. Louis. Sanchez began the game by allowing back-to-back home runs to Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran. After giving up a single to Matt Holliday the 30-year-old pitcher had enough and hit Allen Craig with a pitch. With...

Pirates Continue Their Late Inning Hitting to Beat St. Louis 5-3

Russell Martin led the late comeback with a double and a homer. Photo credit: David Hague The Pirates have had a small trend this year with late inning comebacks. They’ve struggled against starting pitchers, but have managed comebacks against opponents bullpens. That appeared once again in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates were...

Cardinals 9, Pirates 1

This game was extremely frustrating for a number of reasons. The Pirates fell behind as quickly as possible, couldn’t get back in it despite numerous chances, and once again came out on the wrong side of a semi-beanball battle. Jonathan Sanchez has to be done as a Pirate. Has to be. Today he took his awfulness to a whole new level, and there’s no reason at this point to give...

Minor League Schedule: 4/29/13

In tonight’s action, there are two pitchers trying to get back on track, while another looks to continue his domination. Andy Oliver and Tyler Glasnow have both been hurt by control recently, while Stolmy Pimentel looks to keep his ERA at the top of the Eastern League. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We...

Pirates 9, Cardinals 0

Rookie Jeff Locke pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Russell Martin had two of Pittsburgh's four home runs in a 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday that gave the Pirates a series win and the NL Central lead. Jones had three hits and John McDonald added an RBI double for Pittsburgh, which ended rookie Shelby Miller's streak of 14 scoreless innings...

Locke muffles Cardinals in Pirates' 9-0 win

ST. LOUIS (AP) Rookie Jeff Locke pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Russell Martin had two of Pittsburgh's four home runs in a 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday that gave the Pirates a series win and the NL Central lead. Jones had three hits and John McDonald added an RBI double for Pittsburgh, which ended rookie Shelby Miller's streak of 14 scoreless...

The blackout zone

The Pirates play at 4:15 PM EDT today, which means that unless you live in Pittsburgh or St. Louis, you have no chance of seeing them play due to the Saturday Blackout. Last night did not go well for the Pirates, obviously. Jonathan Sanchez faced four batters, retired none, and got thrown out. Clint Hurdle got thrown out protesting Sanchez's ejection (obviously arguing that there...

Game 23: Pirates 5 Cardinals 3

I'm not sure what possessed Mike Matheny to take Jake Westbrook out of the game after six shutout innings and only 91 pitches, but the move certainly went appreciated by the Pirates and their fans. As soon as Westbrooke came out of the game, Pedro Alvarez singled and Russell Martin homered to turn a 2-0 deficit into a tie game. Then Clint Barmes singled, James McDonald came in...

A Long-Awaited Russ Martin Come-Up.

There's a Russell Martin card that has alluded my grasp for quite some time. In fairness, a lot of cards have alluded me, but this particular card has been somewhat available for quite some time from another blogger. I simply could never scrounge up enough to pry it away once it was on the trading block. I no longer have to worry, however, as a copy finally hit eBay and remained...

Game 25: Pirates 9 Cardinals 0

Before the game started, I laid my gameplan out thusly: Jeff Locke needed to keep the game close for as long as Shelby Miller was on the mound, the Pirates needed to work Miller to get him out of the game reasonably early, and the Pirates needed to pile runs on the Cardinals' struggling bullpen. That worked pretty much to perfection with one notable exception: Jeff Locke did...

Pirates 5, Cardinals 3

The Pirates worked their late inning magic yet again and delivered another comeback win on Saturday night in St. Louis. A.J. Burnett made a solid start, the offense woke up in the seventh inning, and the bullpen got the job done as usual. Burnett – still your NL strikeout leader – gave up a quick run and danced around some additional trouble in the following innings, but he was...
