Shelby Miller started the season as the St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospect and ranked as a top 10 prospect in baseball. But as the season has progressed, it appears that he’s regressed. Granted, he’s on his first stop in Triple A, the Pacific Coast League is a hitters league, and he’s young for the league. There really isn’t a reason for the struggles, based off his history. What has gone wrong? <img src="" alt="" title="Shelby Miller” width=”300″ height=”200″ class=”alignleft size-full wp-image-10827″ />Miller came into Spring Training 15 pounds slimmer, which caused concern about how his endurance would hold up. Then reports came out of Memphis of decreased velocity to start the season. He was sitting at 90-92 rather than the 92-94 he would regularly throw at in 2011. That’s a very little change, but it’s enough to allow hitter to catch up a little more. Yesterday, RotoWorl

Motte confident in fastball despite struggles

ST. LOUIS Jason Motte knows what the scouting reports say about him. "I'm a fastball pitcher," Motte said. But that doesn't mean he plans to change anything. Despite a recent rough patch that included his fourth blown save of the season Sunday, Motte says he will continue to pitch the way he always has. Fast. The hard-throwing Motte was one strike away from...

Cardinals offensive woes continue

ST. LOUIS - Mike Matheny has stressed patience, saying almost daily that the Cardinals current offensive slide is nothing more than a blip on the radar of a long season. As the slump goes on, the dot continues to get bigger. The Cardinals scored three runs Tuesday night in a 6-3 loss to Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers. And while struggling to score is understandable against...

Cardinals prepare for designated hitter in Detroit

The two MLB leagues having different numbers of teams, 16 in the National League and 14 in the American, meant interleague play was never symmetric. Being in the oddball six-team NL Central often meant the St. Louis Cardinals were in the midst of the resulting scheduling irregularities. This season is no different. When the Cardinals take the field in Detroit Tuesday night, they...

Where to be Concerned With The Cardinals?

I’ve been looking at the total runs that the Cardinals have scored and allowed to see if there are trends that impact the team. You can see from the numbers that there is a certain line where the team goes from winning to losing. Run Differential The Cardinals have a run differential of +53 (tied for first in the NL with the Dodgers), which is exceptional. Their high point was...

Westbrook's complete game leads Cardinals over Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Jake Westbrook pitched his first complete game in over two years, giving up only an unearned run in the St. Louis Cardinals' 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Westbrook (6-6) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one. It was his 14th career complete game, but his first since May 16, 2010, when he was pitching for Cleveland at Baltimore...

All-Star memories: Jeff Montgomery

Royals Hall of Fame closer Jeff Montgomery had his shoe company to thank for not being nervous about his first All-Star Game appearance in 1992. Prior to the game in San Diego, Reebok asked Montgomery and another Reebok representative, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Tom Pagnozzi, if they would take part in a publicity stunt. Reebok had just introduced its "Pump" shoe to...
