From The Last Angry Fan:

That catch was just ridiculous.

The first round of the NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) Baseball Championships are underway in Washington and already there’s been a play that nearly defies description. In the game between Lower Columbia College (LCC) and Everett Community College, the score was 4-2 for LCC when Everett, already having scored a run, had a man on when DH Keone Kela belted a shot to deep left field that would have knotted the game at 4-4 had it not been for LCC left fielder Derrick Salberg’s insane, home-run robbing catch.

From The Daily News

Derrick Salberg’s leaping catch over the left field bullpen fence with a runner on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning robbed Everett as the Red Devils held on for a 4-2 victory in the first round of the NWAACC Baseball Championships at David Story Field on Friday.

“By far the best catch I’ve ever made,” Salberg said of the Sportscenter Top-10 worthy catch. “I was waiting for the bullpen pitchers to tell me I was getting close to the fence. Thank God I didn’t run into the fence, and I’ve got some hops.”

Salberg’s stellar grab is a definite Play-of-the-Year candidate.

  • I would suggest reporter go back in history and look at the famous catch Willie Mays caught back in 1956. It has been titled the "Catch". Oh I forgot this reporter wasn't born then or either hasn't seen the footage of the Willie Mays's famous catch. There is not comparison between this catch and Willie Mays's catch.
  • I know ,both are distinct.Your gonna take it away from this Kid?I believe the Say Hey Kid would have dug it!
  • Sorry, as an avid baseball fan this catch is, 1) a HR, and 2) average at best.

  • This catch was better than Mays catch. Fact is, catches similar to Mays catch is something you see every day on ESPN. Tory Hunter pretty much made better catches than the one Mays made routinely. Btw, Mays play was in the '54 series.
  • Willie Davis's catch off Boog Powell in the '66 World Series was a great reach over the wall. Willie Davis was a former long jumper and he really got up to get that one.
  • This should have been a home run. Since the player ended up out of the field of play, and he clearly caught the ball over the fence, it is not an out, but a HR. Poor umpiring.

  • According to the rules, one or both of the players feet must be in the field of play when the catch is made. (feet not necessarily touching the ground). I looked closely at the video and when the catch was made the players feet are barely in the field of play. It is a legal catch.
This is no different than a player leaving his feet to catch a foul ball and ending up in the stands.
  • As long as the fielder is not touching the ground in dead ball territory when he catches the ball, it is a legal catch if he holds onto the ball and meets the definition of a catch. If the catch is not the third out and the fielder falls down in dead ball territory, all runners are awarded one base. If the fielder remains on his feet in dead ball territory after the catch, the ball is alive and he may make a play.
Rules: 2.00 CATCH, 6.05(a), 7.04(c) Official Baseball Rules
  • I believe the rule to read that the player had established himself in the field of play, made the catch and landed out of the field of play. With two outs the third out is recorded, with less than two outs, each runner on base would be awarded two bases from the established base prior to the pitcher delivering the ball to home plate.
  • Off the Chain!
  • instead of giving the Kid credit most of you are trying to find out if it is legal or not who cares it was an awesome catch!
