Found March 18, 2014 on The Outside Corner:
Orioles fans probably have a lot of questions about their team going into the 2014 season. Can they break through to the promised land once again? Will Buck Showalter’s magic continue for another season? Will the Orioles struggle without closer Jim Johnson in the fold? All of these questions are worthy of being asked, but they’re not the three key questions for this Orioles team. Can Chris Davis continue to be superhuman? The year that Davis had in 2013 was spectacular – 53 home runs. A 1.003 OPS. A double digit walk rate. A strikeout rate under 30% (which trust me, is a massive accomplishment for Chris Davis). But can he repeat that season? Despite his dominance, there were some flaws in Davis’ 2013. Against left-handers, he hit just .235/.289/.475 with “only” 13 home runs and a walk rate south of 6%. In the second half, Davis’ mojo also began to run out, and he hit .245/.339/.515 with “just” 16 home runs. Davis is also 28, heading into free agency after the 2015 season, and has no...

The two biggest weaknesses of the Baltimore Orioles

There’s not too much to say about the Baltimore Orioles – their offseason activity was non-existent until late in the winter, when they made two of the best signings of any team by inking both Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez to below market deals. But adding that pair of players to a young core that includes Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, and a currently injured...

Manny Machado not ruling out Opening Day

The Baltimore Orioles are hoping that their star second-year infielder Manny Machado will be able to play on Opening Day, and Machado hasn’t ruled that possibility out yet. He has been struggling in his recovery from injury recently, but certainly is still hoping to make a full recovery prior to the seasons beginning. It will be interesting to see where he’s at in a week from...

Baltimore Orioles name their Opening Day starter

Baltimore Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter announced this afternoon that Chris Tillman will start Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox on March 31. “It’s a reward,” said Buck Showalter. A reward for Tillman’s breakout 2013 season when he went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA. The 25-year-old from Southern California will become the club’s fifth Opening Day starter in five years...

Q&A: Dylan Bundy, Baltimore Orioles Pitcher

Dylan Bundy is on his way back to being Dylan Bundy. That’s great news for the Orioles, as the 21-year-old right-hander was the game’s top pitching prospect heading into last season. He underwent Tommy John surgery in June. Bundy’s story is well-known. Drafted fourth overall in 2011, out of an Oklahoma high school, his work […]

The Four Horsemen of the Baltimore Orioles

It isn’t at all difficult to discern what the Baltimore Orioles need in order to become successful in 2014. They need a healthy Manny Machado, the offense to continue to come through like it has in the last couple of years, and for their pitching to jump from one of the more inconsistent units in the league to a staff at is middle-of-the-road, at the very least. When it’s all...

Escalona, Peguero likely to start season on DL

At least two Orioles are likely to start the season on the disabled list. Outfielder Francisco Peguero, who has been sidelined with a sprained right wrist and pitcher Edgmer Escalona, out with a sore right shoulder, aren’t going to be ready to play next week. Peguero hasn’t played in nearly two weeks, and Escalona injured his shoulder on March 2 against Boston. “There’s...

Orioles Rumors: Not much happening with extension for Chris Davis

Chris Davis is going year to year with the Baltimore Orioles.  He'll make $10.35 million this season and has one year of arbitration left before reaching Free Agency at the end of 2015.  It's been long rumored that he would sign an extension with the club but no such deal has come.  Now comes word from Steve Meleski of MASN that a deal isn't close:"Davis said...

Dugout Digest – welcome to Orioles Day

Next up in our season preview series…the Baltimore Orioles, who followed up a playoff berth in 2012 with a respectable, yet disappointing, 85 win season in 2013. The Orioles had one of those offseasons that started off really slow, but blossomed later on as prices began to fall. Can Baltimore once again reach the Postseason, or will they be relegated to an afterthought in the AL...

2014 Season Preview: Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles head into the 2014 season as a bit of an enigma in the American League East. With a top notch offense, with more power than any other team in the Major Leagues, and an absolutely fantastic defense club, one would imagine that the O’s would be near the top of the AL standings when it’s all said and done. However, if there’s one thing that’s going to undo...

Breakout Closer and Sleeper: Tommy Hunter

Closer Poised to Leap Forward: Tommy Hunter Jim Johnson and his 101 saves over two seasons are gone, shipped off to Oakland. Grant Balfour didn’t satisfy the health criteria of the Orioles. Thus, the closer role is up for grabs, and a recently converted starter could be poised to make the big step into [...]

Chris Tillman Tabbed as O's Opening Day Starter

This week, Chris Tillman earned a ceremonial, but very notable appointment. He is tabbed to start on Opening Day as the Orioles face the Boston Red Sox – who as we all know won the 2013 World Series – at Camden Yards on March 31st. From the Baltimore Sun: Any time you get the chance to get that kind of opportunity it’s a big deal,” Tillman said of being named the...

NOTICE: TODAY'S GAME IS THREATENED BY T-STORMS AND SHOWERS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR ANY FURTHER UPDATES. Yesterday was not a good day for the Phils as they were shut out by the Pirates 5-0. Sean O'Sullivan improved himself a bit, allowing two earned runs on four hits in four innings...
