Struggling to even trot along the basepaths let alone run Miguel Cabrera left Saturday night’s game with groin pain the Tigers say is not a sports hernia. After the Tigers had come back from a 6-0 hole to beat the White Sox 7-6 at Comerica Park Kevin Rand the Tigers head trainer officially described Cabrera’s ongoing pain as “a left groin strain.” He ruled out any diagnosis of a sports hernia which has been mentioned in national reports as a probable cause of the Tigers slugger’s two-month ills. “Miguel did a lot of running tonight” Rand said in response to Detroit News questions about Cabrera’s Saturday night exit. “He scored from second base on a hit (Victor Martinez’s ninth-inning double). He had soreness.” Tigers manager Jim Leyland was nonetheless alarmed by what he saw from Cabrera which included the black-and-blue abdominal area that has been Cabrera’s sore spot since mid-summer. “I’d say he’s pretty doubtful” Leyland said of the chance Cabrera would play in Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox. “I’m a little concerned about it to be perfectly honest. I actually thought he was getting better.” It was clear that Cabrera to whatever degree his sore midsection has improved was not cooperating with his legs following a fourth-inning leadoff hit to right field. Cabrera turned at first and was planning on running out an all-but-certain double. But he was barely able to jog to second and was thrown out easily by Avisail Garcia the one-time Tigers outfielder. “I thought he felt like he had a good chance” Leyland said. “It’s a tough position for a guy. You know you should have a double but it’s not possible.” Cabrera was jovial after a wild come-from-behind victory but conceded the pain is a problem. “I was feeling good today but the last few innings I was sore” said Cabrera who had three singles Saturday.
