Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias is out of the lineup because of a sore left elbow. Ramon Santiago is set to start at shortstop Saturday against New York Mets ace Matt Harvey. Iglesias was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from David Aardsma in the ninth inning of the series opener Friday night. Iglesias remained in the game but his elbow swelled up. X-rays were negative, but manager Jim Leyland says Iglesias can't bend his arm and won't be available off the bench Saturday. Leyland says hopefully Iglesias can play Sunday. The slick-fielding Iglesias was acquired by the AL Central leaders from Boston late last month in advance of the 50-game suspension given to All-Star shortstop Jhonny Peralta in the Biogenesis drug investigation. The rookie is hitting .319 with two home runs and 23 RBIs, including .286 with one homer and four RBIs in 21 games for Detroit.

Max Scherzer nets win No. 19

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer outpitched New York Mets starter Matt Harvey in their All-Star rematch Saturday. Scherzer striked out 11 and hit an RBI double with one out in the second inning to lead

Tigers' Martinez to catch for 1st time in 2 years

Victor Martinez is set to start at catcher for the first time in two years, and he could hardly contain his excitement. Martinez was penciled in behind the plate for the Detroit Tigers against the New York Mets in the opener of their interleague series Friday night at Citi Field. With no designated hitter allowed in the National League ballpark, Tigers manager Jim Leyland put Martinez...

Cabrera knocking 'em in at record pace

DETROIT -- Home-run sluggers make headlines, and batting averages have defined hitters dating all the way back to Detroit Tigers immortal Ty Cobb. The Triple Crown statistic that musters the least attention and acclaim is runs batted in -- the RBI or ribbie, in the vernacular of the game. Most of the games outstanding hitters, however, will tell you that the RBI is the most important...

Game 2013.129: Tigers at Mets

75-53, 1st place, 6 games up on Cle. Solid win last night. Hunter and Cabrera put the Tigers up early, and Fister pitched well enough over 6 1/3 innings of 1 run ball for the W. Martinez looked good behind the plate and I like that he was spelled by Pena late in the game. Bruce Rondon closed out the 9th nicely, allowing 1 hit and striking 1 one in the 9th. He’s been doing a lot...

Hickory Dickory Dock, Cabrera Just Cleaned My Clock

At first glance of the boxscore, Daisuke Matsuzaka was who we thought he was. And there was no way that Miguel Cabrera would let him off the hook. Dice K gave up two home runs including a three run shot to Cabrera that tragically landed in somebody's pierogies in the Acela Club, and the Mets predictably lost to the Tigers 6-1. Considering that Daisuke's outing was peppered...

Tigers blast Mets with 18-hit barrage, sweep series

With the Tigers clinging to a one-run lead in the top of the ninth closer Joaquin Benoit was starting to warm up in the bullpen. Before the Tigers made their second out Benoit was no longer needed to save the game as the lead had ballooned in the raucous ninth. Eight consecutive batters reached base — seven on singles — and the Tigers quickly turned a nail-biter into a laugher...

Big hits from Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera lead Tigers to 6-1 win over Mets

Before Friday’s game Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter sat by his locker in the visiting clubhouse studying video on his iPad of Mets starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Hunter was cramming to prep for Matsuzaka who signed a one-year contract Thursday and was named Friday’s starter after spending the season with the Indians at Triple A Columbus. Hunter’s studying paid off as he went...

Game 2013.128: Tigers at Mets

74-53, 1st place, 5 games up. “WAR – What is it good for?” Well, evaluating players, for one thing. Or so we think. As we all know, the WAR debate dominated the MVP race last year, with Cabrera and his old school hitting stats (summarized as “the best right handed hitter in our generation”) beat out the sabre-favorite Mike Trout and his 1st to 3rd ability and low GIDP...

Defensively, Williams Following Austin Jackson’s Path

TRENTON, N.J. – Mason Williams, as could be expected, is scuffling a bit at the plate as he adjusts to Double-A pitching. In nine games with the Trenton Thunder, the Yankees’ Double-A farm team, he is 7-for-41 (.171) with a home run  and four RBIs. “I am getting more comfortable at the plate, game by game,’’ said Williams, who drove in the game-winning run in Trenton...

Miguel Cabrera, 30-second Man

With a long (long) blast down the third-base line in New York's Citi Field -- off the just-called up Daisuke Matsuzaka, no less -- Miguel Cabrera has given us the second thirty-second trot of the 2013 season! Way to go, Miggy! The trot officially clocked in at 30.94 seconds. Here's how it came about: Cabrera stepped up to the plate in the second inning with...

Max Scherzer picks up 19th win by blanking Mets

getty images Max Scherzer is now 19-1 after picking up a win in Saturday’s game against the New York Mets. Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings and struck out 11 Mets. The 29-year-old right-hander has a 2.73 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. Scherzer allowed three hits and walked three while throwing 78 of 118 pitches for strikes. This time a month ago Scherzer was sporting a 3.14 ERA...

Scherzer outpitches Harvey

NEW YORK (AP) -- Max Scherzer outpitched Matt Harvey in their All-Star rematch, striking out 11 and hitting a stunning RBI double that sent the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday. Scherzer (19-1) joined Rube Marquard in 1912 and Roger Clemens in 2001 as the only major league pitchers to win 19 of their first 20 decisions in a season. Andy Dirks had...

D’Arnaud Homers, But Mets Can’t Avoid Sweep After 11-3 Mauling By Tigers

TIGERS LEAVE METS IN TATTERS AFTER 11-3 MAULING The Mets got pounced on by the Tigers who beat them 11-3 this afternoon at Citi Field to complete a three game sweep and leave them licking their wounds. Dillon Gee started for the Mets and wasn’t nearly as sharp as we’ve seen from him of late. The right-hander let up four runs and got knocked around for ten hits including home...
