Being a sports fan is tough. Being a Detroit sports fan is even tougher.
I have endured the journey for 19 long years now. Okay, perhaps a little less than that, but my parents did drape me in Detroit sports apparel since the day I was born about 19 years ago.
So, my knowledge doesn’t go too far back and my dad reminds me of this every time the Lions lose a game they should have won, “It’s the same old Lions, it never changes. Calvin Johnson is the new Barry Sanders.”
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I started thinking: What are the greatest Detroit sports moments I’m thankful for?
So, I compiled a list of the top 10 best Detroit sports moments from my memory (so about the past decade).
10. Mega Comeback

Calvin Johnson and Lions do make my list. Well, only because I felt bad for them- I grew up in the Joey Harrington era. And when I thought it couldn’t get worse, they had the dreadful 0-16 season....

The Detroit Tigers mean a lot to me. I have been fortunate enough to shake Al Kaline’s hand, witness Lou Whitaker hit one onto the roof in 1984, see Sparky Anderson walk slowly toward the third base dugout before a game in Texas and hand a ball to the youngster on my left, watch Justin Verlander shut down the New York Yankees in the 2012 ALCS with the rowdies in Kaline’s corner...
With Prince Fielder headed to Texas, the Detroit Tigers have an opening at first base. Current third baseman Miguel Cabrera has the right man in mind: himself. On the Thanksgiving edition of MLB Tonight, MLB Network analysts Fran Charles, Mitch Williams, and Tom Verducci reported that Cabrera has told his team that he wants to return to first base where he played most of his games...
With Prince Fielder on the move to Texas, Miguel Cabrera wouldn’t mind moving back across the diamond next season.
Cabrera, who played third base for the Detroit Tigers the past two seasons with Fielder at first base, has told the Tigers “I want to play first base,” according to Venezuelan newspaper El Universal.
It would seem like a logical move for the Tigers to move Cabrera...
The Bullpen of the Detroit Tigers has been a huge flaw of the team over the past couple of season, so I guess it makes sense. Tigers new manager Brad Ausmus reportedly met with free agent closer Brian Wilson in Los Angeles recently. While it isn’t currently clear whether or not the Beard will be […]
The Detroit Tigers were very lucky to get themselves out of a ridiculously bad contract when they traded Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers for Ian Kinsler. They still have a bad contract on the books but it ends sooner, and is far easier to work around. The money they saved in the short term […]
All of a sudden, the eccentric Brian Wilson has become underrated, which could quietly make him a perfect fit as Tigers’ closer. (jonaswashere, Flickr)
If recent rumors are true, the Detroit Tigers may be inching toward a solution at closer with the flamboyant Brian Wilson, formally of the San Francisco Giants and perhaps soon formally of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
For many, that...
It would be fitting that Thanksgiving should be a day to remember a baseball player with the first name of “Turkey.” Norman Thomas Stearnes was a former Negro Leagues outfielder who spent 20 years playing in the Negro Leagues (1920-1939). Because of the time he played, Turkey unfortunately was well passed his playing career by the time Jackie Robinson had broken the color barrier...
