If you are a die hard Baseball fan you live for opening day. It’s the first day of the upcoming Baseball season and all teams no matter how good or bad they were after the previous season all start the day with the same record 0-0. Hope springs eternal. We the die hard fan believe this is the year our team will finally break through and win the World Series.Yes Opening day is Baseball’s moment in the sun. Why? The radios are tuned in to whatever AM or FM station is carrying your favorite team, or maybe you are watching your team on tv or maybe if you have laptop or desktop you are live streamming your team’s game, but today you are hooked on Baseball, today you gave your allegence to your team. You either twitted on twitter, or blogged about it or better yet texted a friend about whether their team won or lost. Opening day is about hope and the promise that this is your team’s best day. There is only one opening day each season. Your team in it’s building, it’s electric, it’s the best crowd for some teams they will have all year, so you want to make your best impression. My team the New York Mets make a habit of making a good impression on opening day. They have won 33 of the last 43 home openers in their building(Shea/ Citifield) So today saw the Mets show their fans what this team can do when everyone does their part. They win. They got great pitching from Jonathan Niese clutch hitting from Colin Cowgill who hit a grandslam in the game and they gave the fans something to smile about…a win 11-2 against the San Diego Padres. Yankee fans can’t say the same today. They opened at home against their hated rivals the Boston RedSox and the Sox beat the Yankees 8-2. Tomorrow is fast coming and the excitement of opening day will be replaced with the hope of repeating what your team did if it won on opening, or if it lost then you live with the hope that it will turn it’s fortunes around and win today. I haven’t made any predictions for who was going to win in any division or how the Mets and Yankees will do this year. I don’t think there are the usual high expectations for the Yankees because of trimming payroll and injuried stars that will miss the early part of the season, a wounded animal is a dangerous animal but the American league East will be a tight race where any team can win. As for the Mets all I ask for this season …is that they don’t embarass themselves that’s all. As for the rest I am looking forward to see how everything shakes out. Someone will surprise us all and someone will disappoint us but there is no doubt opening day is for the fans to hope and dream … Opening day …Baseball’s moment in the sun.
