As if there hasn’t been enough good news concerning the Detroit Tigers so far this season.  After a 4-0, including a sweep of the Red Sox and a win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the Tigers are off to a 4-0 start.  Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder have shown that they’re going to be a nasty 1-2 punch in the middle of the lineup.  Austin Jackson has been white hot to start the season after reconfiguring his swing and approach this winter.

And the good news keeps coming in, well potentially.  Victor Martinez, who hurt his knee in late January slipping during a sliding drill, did not end up needing ACL surgery according to Tom Gage of the Detroit News.  It was originally thought that V-Mart had a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and that he’d miss all of 2012.  With that, the wheels were put in motion for the Prince Fielder signing.  Now, owner Mike Ilitch might have his cake (Fielder) and be able to eat it too (with Martinez).

Via Twitter, Gage said that nobody will know until about July whether Martinez might be able to see game action this season.  He did undergo microfracture surgery in January to repair both the medial and lateral meniscus.  He was supposed to have the ACL surgery six to eight weeks later, which would have been around this time.

A potential return would slot V-Mart into the DH spot and likely behind Fielder in the five spot of the lineup.  But, it would mean that Delmon Young would most likely be the full-time left fielder – which is nice for the offense but very spotty for the defense.  Regardless, this team will built on offense.  And with a Martinez return, opposing pitchers will find this lineup to be even more downright offensive.
