Ryne Sandberg hasn’t been Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies very long, but he already finds himself at the heart of national media controversy. Sort of. Daily Show host Jon Stewart lit into him last night on his Comedy Central talk show, then segueing into an all out assault on the city of Philadelphia. The late night talk show host and comedian really goes off on Philly fare, the Phillies mascot, and Philly culture in response to the claims Ryne Sandberg made that the Shake Shack restaurant at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets, made him extremely sick. It’s reminiscent of the recent Stewart tirade against the city of Chicago, which like this rant, involves disputes over food and features Stewart in his full on New Jersey accent mode. And Stewart often calls attention to his New York Mets fandom, so you can understand what set him off here. However, it’s all in good fun as Stewart himself mentions the Hall of Fame career and never been questioned integrity of the former Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg. The whole video is funny and definitely worth watching, but if you want to skip ahead to the Ryne Sandberg and Philadelphia stuff, fast forward to the 4:00 mark.
