If a recent report is accurate, the New York Rangers will some seriously high-profile candidates for their vacant head coaching position. According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier — two of the most prominent players in the history of the franchise — are both interested in the job. The Rangers entered the season as a Stanley Cup favorite under John Tortorella, but a subpar regular season and second-round playoff exit cost Tortorella his job, leaving a vacancy behind the bench for general manager Glen Sather to fill. Gretzky and Messier have experience in head coaching roles, and both would certainly be greeted with open arms by a fanbase that has not seen a championship since Messier’s “guaranteed” playoff run in 1993-94. The former Rangers captain served as Team Canada’s boss in 2010, and Gretzky spent four seasons coaching the Phoenix Coyotes before stepping down in 2009. Whether or not these two legends would lead the Blueshirts back to the promised lan...

More fallout from the firing of John Tortorella

Mike Sullivan won’t be behind the bench next year either As the feeling of shock lifts from the Ranger fan community, we’ve begun to examine some possible replacements for coach John Tortorella.  The new man behind the bench will be the story of the offseason, but the departure of Tortorella could also have an impact on many other important decisions the franchise will make...

Sean Avery Says He Had ‘Huge Smile’ on Face When He Heard John Tortorella Was Fired

Reaction to the departure of former Rangers coach John Tortorella since his firing Wednesday has been mixed, but at least one of his former players couldn’t be happier about it. Former Rangers forward Sean Avery, who played under Tortorella from March 2009 until his retirement last season, told The New York Post on Thursday that he was glad to hear about his former coach being...

Ranger Nation: When should the Rangers buy out Richards?

There is little doubt the Rangers will need to exercise their second compliance buyout to extricate themselves from the disaster that has become the Brad Richards contract. We can argue all day about whether the signing was a good one at the time or not but today that is irrelevant. As Bob Mackenzie noted last [...]

Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier interested in Rangers’ job

Two former stars of the New York Rangers are interested in the team’s vacant head coaching position, according to Sportnet’s Nick Kypreos. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier are reportedly both interested in succeeding John Tortorella, who was fired May 29 following the team’s

Hagelin and Callahan injuries represent other opportunities

JT Miller and Chris Kreider could have a huge opportunity next season It is never good news when a player as crucial (and popular) as Ryan Callahan goes down with a serious injury, even if the timing couldn’t be much better from a recovery stand point. The same goes for Carl Hagelin who despite consistency issues has proven to be a good find for the Rangers and who is a core piece...

To celebrate his firing, here are some of John Tortorella’s greatest hits (video)

Amid the coverage of the fallout related to the somewhat quick but not altogether surprising dismissal of John Tortorella by the New York Rangers, the New York Daily News compiled a montage of some of the former head coach’s best tantrums during his four-plus-season tenure as the always-fiery presence behind the team’s bench. Tortorella frequently [...]The post To celebrate his...

Claude Julien Feels for John Tortorella, Expects Former Rangers Coach to Land Another Job Soon

The Bruins’ 3-1 win over the Rangers last Saturday dropped New York out of the playoffs and put John Tortorella out of a job. Tortorella was fired as head coach of the Blueshirts on Wednesday, five days after they were eliminated by the Bruins in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Torts’ pack-it-in style of hockey and notoriously prickly attitude toward the media rubbed many...

Sean Avery: I had a ‘huge smile’ when Rangers fired John Tortorella

Sean Avery played for former New York Rangers coach John Tortorella from 2009 to 2012, so the two are quite familiar with one another. On March 30 after the Rangers lost 3-0 to the Montreal Canadiens, Avery ripped Tortorella in a tweet. “Fire this CLOWN, his players hate him and won’t play for his BS [...]

How I Want to Remember Torts

With John Tortorella being fired there's been a lot of posting of his top 10 media outbursts, but for me I'd rather post this video which shows how much the success of the Rangers organization meant to him... ...listen, I don't have my head in the sand when it comes to Tortorella's shortcomings. The power play was abysmal, his failure to adapt his system...

Rangers To Speak With Alain Vigneault, Dallas Eakins

As expected, Glen Sather has wasted little time preparing to bring in the next head coach of the New York Rangers after firing John Tortorella two days ago. Recently fired Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault as well as Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins are the first two the Rangers have been formally linked to.   Rangers granted permission to speak with Dallas...

Ranger Nation: Who Should Be Rangers Head Coach; Who Would Be a Mistake

Glen Miller Who I would choose:  I’ve gone back-and-forth in my head between Dave Tippett and Guy Boucher. Tippett has accomplished a lot given the circumstances he’s had to deal with in Phoenix. Yet the youth and innovation displayed by Boucher tips the scales in his favor. I think back to his first season in [...]

Is Messier a Serious Candidate to Coach This Team?; Weight Could Also Be Option

Bob McKenzie at TSN says if Mark Messier is interested, he can't be ruled out as a contender for the Rangers vacant head coach position, but there's no hurry to get him behind the bench. McKenzie adds that Edmonton talked to Messier about considering their head coach opening last offseason, however, he declined because he either wasn't prepared to commit to coaching...

Photo via BostonHerald.comScott LevesqueManaging Editor It's been six carefree days since the Bruins sent the New York Rangers and John Tortorella packing for a long off-season break.
