Jesse Crain of the White Sox is today's third reliever to get dealt. Chicago is sending Crain go the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for the always nebulous "future considerations", depending on the health of Crain's shoulder. Crain hasn't pitched since June 29th due to a strained muscle in his left shoulder, and he's been on the DL since July 2nd for the White Sox. Before the injury, the 32-year old Crain was one of the best middle relievers in baseball. In 36 2/3 innings, Crain had a sterling 0.74 ERA to go along with 46 strikeouts and just 11 walks while serving as the primary setup man for Chicago closer Addison Reed. He's in the final year of a three year, $13 million deal that he signed with the White Sox prior to the 2011 season, and is making $4.5 million this year. Crain is also the second White Sox reliever to be traded this summer after Matt Thornton was shipped to the Red Sox earlier this month. The return for Crain will depend on his health, and likely be based on some sort of innings pitched requirement (UPDATE: or not, according to Ken Rosenthal). The Rays will either send a player to be named later of case back to the White Sox in exchange for the right-hander. Tampa Bay needed another reliever thanks to the struggles of Fernando Rodney and erraticness of Kyle Farnsworth, and a healthy Crain would definitely fit the bill. Also, to update an earlier post about Jake Peavy, Chicago is apparently going to hang on to Peavy and be building around him. That seems a little strange on the surface, considering the age of this White Sox team and the relative weakness of their farm system. But the team's only significant free agent this winter is first baseman Paul Konerko, and the team brings back every major player from this year outside of Konerko, bench bat Dewayne Wise, and injured starting pitcher Gavin Floyd. If Peavy is able to prove himself healthy and throw another 100 innings before the end of the season, maybe the market for him will heat up again, either at next year's trade deadline or perhaps at the Winter Meetings.
