Long time Angel catcher Jeff Mathis is in jeopardy of losing his job now that the Angels have traded for Chris Iannetta.  Mathis is considered a standout defensive catcher and pitcher's love throwing to him, but he's one of the worst offensive players in the game.

Mathis has always been an above-average defensive catcher but has been one of baseball's weakest hitters with a career .194 average, .257 on-base percentage, 26 home runs and 139 runs batted in. He had his worst offensive season in 2011, with a .174 average, .225 OBP, three homers and 22 RBIs. source Los Angels Times

Manager Mike Scioscia has driven Angel fans a bit nuts by repeatedly using him in the line-up despite being an offensive liability, presumably because of his handling of pitchers and defense. However, with a new GM the team is looking for more offensive production and that makes Mathis either a non-tender or trade candidate.

"Jeff brings an important part to the team that sometimes is not as exciting to fans and media as some other things you might see on the field," Manager Mike Scioscia said.

"But anyone who has played that position or understands the pitcher-catcher relationship is very excited about the presence Jeff brings behind the plate. It's obviously important to us, and hopefully he'll be back in the lineup soon." source Los Angels Times

Whether Mathis shows up on the Mets radar will really come down to how much they feel their major league pitching staff needs an on-the-field coach and does that need out weigh his offensive deficiencies.
