At what price does Prado come at? In a report from Mlive Contributor Ian Casselberry earlier today, he mentioned that the Detroit Tigers were interested in trading for Atlanta Braves super utility player Martin Prado to fill our 2nd base hole. At first I was very excited about the report since Prado is a great player and would defiantly help us at 2nd base and fill in at lead off or 2nd in the batting order. Prado has played 2B, 3B, LF,RF,SS and 1B in his 6 year career with the Braves and carries a .293 average with 13 HR’s and 66 RBI’s. Production like that with the versatility to play all those positions is very rare to find these days…but at what price would the Tigers have to pay to get him? From the report earlier it looks like that price would be one of the newest and most productive players we have…Delmon Young! Now I am not so sure about the trade if it’s true. Lets compare shall we. They say the number one rule in trading is that you have to give up something to get something, but I just don’t know if I am ready to give up Delmon quite yet. The Tigers seemed to hit the jackpot on picking up Young as he was one of the most productive players in the post season for us in 2011. In 9 games Young hit 5 HR’s had 6 RBI’s and every HR he hit seemed to be a game winning or tying RBI. He was “Mr. Clutch” for u, and before he was hurt he was hands down our MVP of the playoffs, even over Tigers All Star Miguel Cabrera. He is only 26 years old (2 years 10 months younger than Prado) and has higher career averages in HR’s, RBI’s and SB’s then Prado. There are some positives from Prado to consider as well, the most being the many positions he can play for us. Some other things to consider is that Prado is from Venezuela (same as most tigers) and he is going to come at a cheaper price then Delmon Young. Prado can lead off and hit in the 2 hole which brings added value to the Tigers as well. All that being said I would say that I would stick with Delmon Young in this case and not make the trade. Having a good 3 hole or cleanup hitter that is 2 years younger is more important to me. I would look to get Kelly Johnson from Atlanta instead or of course…go after Jose Reyes…who was just offered 6 years $90M by the Marlins. What would you do Detroit fans?
