PLAYERS: Derek Jeter
TEAMS: New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have confirmed that they'll welcome Derek Jeter back tonight, activating the Captain from his third stint on the disabled list this season. Manager Joe Girardi told reporters -- including Bobby Nightengale of -- that, while the team will take things slow with Jeter, they are expecting him to produce immediately. "He has played three days in a row [on a rehab assignment]. From everything I understand, he felt pretty good," manager Joe Girardi said. "I don't know if we can afford to be apprehensive." It's unclear what type of rest strategy the Yankees will use with Jeter, but he figures to see time at shortstop as well as designated hitter moving forward. In order to keep his bat in lineup but also provide him with rest as he works his way back to regular play, the Yankees are likely to frequently switch him between shortstop and DH. Eduardo Nunez has held his own at short, making it easier for New York to slide Jeter to DH on occasion. While it's always a positive to get a player such as Jeter back, New York still has a ways to go as they continue to contend in the American League East. Jeter hasn't been able to stay healthy after returning from the ankle injury that ended his 2012 campaign, and it remains to be seen if he's capable of resuming his former role as a regular shortstop.
