Phil Hughes got the start in today’s matinee rubber match of the series. After a smooth start through the first two innings, the third inning had an unusual event. David Murphy led off with a single and on a 3-2 pitch to top prospect Jurickson Profar, Murphy ran. The pitch would go outside for ball four but Murphy came off of second base assuming he was out. Shortstop Jayson Nix put a tag on Murphy who vacated second base and it would be scored a walk with a putout at second base. Outfielder Engel Beltre would get his first major league hit that moved Profar from first to third. Ian Kinsler would hit a deep enough fly ball to bring home the first run of the game. In the fourth inning, Hughes got into a jam when a double and a hit batter put two on with no outs. Three fly outs would get him out of that jam. But in the fifth inning, Profar would take advantage of the short porch for his third home run of the season, putting the Rangers ahead by two. This would be more than enough for Rangers pitcher Derek Holland. Left-handed Holland gave up a lead-off single to Ichiro Suzuki and a two-out third inning single by Austin Romine were all the Yankees could get. The Yankees offense even let Holland have a five-pitch sixth inning. In his complete game shutout, Derek Holland allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking two. He threw 92 pitches. Phil Hughes would go on to be the tough luck loser, going a strong eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.   Win – Derek Holland (6-4) Loss – Phil Hughes (3-7)   Notables Rangers *Jurickson Profar – 1 for 2, 2 R, BB, Solo Home Run (3) in the 5th, RBI (8) *Engel Beltre – 2 for 3 Yankees *Austin Romine – 1 for 2 *Ichiro Suzuki – 1 for 4   Current Yankees Record: 42-36   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.
