It’s another World Series-or-bust season for the New York Yankees. With only so many years of prime Aaron Judge left, the club is all in on winning their first championship since 2009.
They’ve seen their AL East division lead evaporate thanks to the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays, but 56-46 New York remains in a playoff spot and squarely in the mix to make a deep run.
However, the team certainly has its flaws, some of them being glaring. While the Yankees could use more pitching, nothing compares to their need at third base, an issue they have struggled to solve for quite some time.
On Wednesday, MLB insider Jim Bowden appeared on “Foul Territory” and shared what he’s heard general manager Brian Cashman and company are seeking in an upgrade at the hot corner.
“I think they wanna do better than McMahon. Look, Ryan is not the same guy he was three years ago,” Bowden said. “I get the feeling that the Yankees love Suarez’s power; they don’t love the defense. Analytic department doesn’t love Hayes or McMahon. It doesn’t mean the scouts wouldn’t take a chance on them.… Remember, the expectations in New York is to win a World Series or bust, not just beat Toronto and win the AL East; they’re trying to win a World Series. So I think they’re shooting for better; they’re shooting for the Suarez, or Maikel Garcia, or Mark Vientos, or that next level above McMahon, above Hayes.”

The Yankees have been linked to McMahon in the past, but the Rockies have never been willing to rip the band-aid off and move their third baseman. Hayes has also come up in trade rumors over the years, though Bowden doesn’t think New York wants to go that route.
Suarez is the best bat on the market ahead of this year's trade deadline amid a massive 36-home run and 86-RBI season through 101 games. The cost for the 34-year-old will likely be high, with many playoff contenders bidding for his services.
Garcia of the Royals earned his first All-Star appearance this season and would provide some of the contact and plate discipline New York needs, as well as solid defense.
Meanwhile, Vientos is having a down year but showed his potential in 2024, posting 27 homers and 71 RBI in 111 games for the Mets. The defensive side of the game isn't his calling card, which makes Garcia a stronger fit should the Yankees have a choice.
Both are intriguing options, though neither is as likely to be dealt as the three others previously mentioned.
The Yankees have their preferences when it comes to acquiring a third baseman ahead of the deadline; the question is whether they will be able to execute on them and get their wish.
