Albert Pujols (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The Yankees finally are back in New York after a road trip where they both got and did some sweeping. After starting the season losing three games to the Rays, the Yankees went into Baltimore and did the opposite against the Orioles. Two of the three wins went into extra innings, but the Yankees battled and now will open up at the Stadium at an acceptable .500 but the war hasn’t even begun yet. The Yankees are set to host the Los Angeles Angels, who lost their opening series to the Royals and are now tied in a series vs. Twins that ends today before the three game set in the Bronx. With the 2012 season still so fresh it is presumptuous to label any team for certain, but I can say both teams are considered to be serious playoff contenders in 2012. The competition is sure to be steeper, and looking at both teams neither is performing up to expectations just yet but this weekend should expose any weaknesses. Here is a breakdown of tomorrow’s mat...

Pujols' contract ($240M) dwarfs average (.217)

Albert Pujols is learning that hitting a baseball is tougher when the number attached to your name has a dollar sign. After a weak opening week with the Los Angeles Angels, Pujols has a contract ($240 million) more imposing than his batting average (.217). He had no home runs and just two RBIs going into Friday's game at New York, the Yankees' season opener. After leaving...

Yanks dominate Angels in home opener

Albert Pujols is learning that hitting a baseball is tougher when the number attached to your name has a dollar sign. After a weak opening week with the Los Angeles Angels, he has a contract ($240 million) more imposing than his batting average (.222). He has two RBIs. Deuces wild, and not in a good way. ''I'm a human,'' he said. ''Sometimes you want...

New York Yankees Fragrance Review, Pt 1: For Her

Opening Day at the Stadium is finally here! If you'll be at the game today, Albert Pujols and the Angels won't be the only things you'll see.  The Yankees will be unveiling their new fragrances: New York Yankees For Her and For Him.A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to get my hands on some samples of NYY For Her. The accompanying literature has a tag line of "New...

Kuroda Worried About His Stadium Opening Start

From Andrew Marchand:Hiroki Kuroda has never played in Yankee Stadium. So when he throws the first home pitch for the Yankees a little after 1 p.m. on Friday, he will have more nerves than anything else. "Rather than being excited, I'm more worried about how I'm going to perform," Kuroda said through his interpreter. ... "Since I've never pitched...

Kuroda Is Worried? Oh, Mama!

After reaching the .500 mark this week in Baltimore, the Yankees open their home season tomorrow at the Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Pitching for the Yankees will be one of their new acquisitions, Hiroki Kuroda. And Kuroda, according to Bryan Hoch of, is worried about it.I'll get back to that shortly. But first, I'd be lying if I said I wasn...

Lucrative 1B contracts a risk for teams

I'm intrigued by the showdown this weekend between Albert Pujols, the Los Angeles Angels' $240 million first baseman, and Mark Teixeira, the New York Yankees' $180 million man. I doubt that any of us will be as fascinated in 2016, the final year of Teixeira's contract and fifth of Pujols' 10-year deal. Both could decline before then. Heck, both appear in decline...

MLB Week 1: Relax, it’s only been six games

Tim Lincecum’s ERA is hovering around 13.00, the Boston Red Sox have one win, and the St. Louis Cardinals are better without Albert Pujols?  One week into the season and the apocalypse has struck.  When the Braves started 0-4, their worst start since 1988, as a Braves fan I was close to throwing in the towel. But as fans do, we overreact.  Boston is still reeling from their...

A-Rod, Kuroda help make Yanks home opener a winner

Alex Rodriguez hit his 630th home run and tied Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth place on the career list and Hiroki Kuroda pitched excellently in his pinstripes debut as the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 Friday in their 110th home opener. Nick Swisher lined a three-run double off Ervin Santana (0-2) in the first inning soon after recently retired teammate Jorge Posada...

New York Yankees: Wilson vs. Hughes

Mandalatv . . 1,272×954 (691 KB) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) If you looked at Kuroda and Santana’s career stats vs. the active hitters prior to yesterday’s game, the Yankee win was already a lock. Not taking anything away from Kuroda, but...
