According to a major league source, despite a report from CBSSports.com that the Red Sox are “moving toward a deal” with Vicente Padilla, the Red Sox are merely “talking to [Padilla] among others” and there is “nothing to report” about the team’s interest, despite a separate report out of Nicaragua that the 34-year-old flew to Boston on Thursday to be examined by the team’s medical staff. Another baseball source suggested that Padilla has been talking with several teams this winter, including the Red Sox.

The 13-year veteran has been pitching in Nicaragua this winter to show that he is once again healthy. By most accounts, he has done just that, with his fastball reportedly being clocked in the mid-90s.[...]

WEEI: Source: 'Nothing to report' in Red Sox interest in Vicente Padilla

Honestly, I don't care that there is nothing to report on Padilla. I thought he was done in the majors and when his name came up in reports I shrugged my shoulders and I said "good for him". Unless he has somehow developed miraculous stuff at his ripe old baseball age of 34, I don't think many people care. The point is, who cares about all of these conflicting reports, it's not C.J. Wilson.

Now the positives. Padilla has had a decent career and he will be a great addition if the Red Sox can get him for little money. He has spent most of his career in the NL, but we have seen him pitch a hand-full of time against the Sox. I don't remember anything really impressive, because no one outing is standing out in my mind. There is not much to say about him other than he is an average pitcher that can be good at times. Here are his career stats for you to munch on...

Vicente Padilla: High Risk, Medium Reward

The Red Sox entered the 2011 season with high hopes of winning their third championship of the millennium. Best laid plans didn’t come to fruition as the events of that wild and wacky final day of the regular season kept them out of the playoffs entirely. Their offense wasn’t to blame, as the Red Sox posted a league-leading .351 wOBA and 116 wRC+. Their bullpen led the...

Next up in the pitching bargain bin: Vicente Padilla

Ooh boy. Ben Cherington's "I want a Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon" strategy is becoming even more apparent, as MLBTradeRumors passes along a story in a Nicaraguan paper that says the Red Sox have met with former Phillie, Dodger, and Ranger Vicente Padilla. Padilla had some success early in his career, and hasn't really tailed off quite as badly as I originally...

Trade With Cards From The Quarry: A Mike Piazza Bat Slice, A Numbered Bison, and Some Needed Set Needs.

I completed my fourth trade with Johnny of Cards From The Quarry fame. You can check out the first here, the second here, and the third here. I sent my Rockies friend an auto, a low, low serial-numbered TriStar card, and a rookie cup card he needed from the 60s. In return, I received these great cards. Los Angeles Dodgers Not Getting Prince Fielder & Frank McCourt Still An Asshole

While there’s nothing wrong with pipe dreams, and the speculation about the Los Angeles Dodgers and Prince Fielder was inevitable given the team’s needs and his need for a team, it was never all that realistic. As such, Buster Olney‘s suggestion was understandable, but Bill Shaikin‘s rebuttal was reasonable, as Mike Petriello pointed out. As you can imagine...

Sayonara Kuroda

Well, being free agent in a weak pitching market has to be good deal these days. With Hiroki Kuroda coming off his strongest season with the Dodgers, he now has a new home with former teammate Paul Lo Duca. The New York Yankees have signed Kuroda to a 1-year $10m contract which keeps him from returning to Japan after a 4 season long career in Los Angeles. Kuroda was a well-liked...
