On Sunday it was announced that right-handed pitcher Zach Petrick would be headed to Class Double-A Springfield from High-A Palm Beach and will start for the S-Cards on Tuesday. It took an injury to Anthony Ferrara to happen, but Petrick receives the overdue promotion. He started the season at Low-A Peoria, in the Chiefs bullpen. In 16 games out of the ‘pen for the Peoria Chiefs, Petrick went 1-0 with a 0.83 ERA and he recorded 46 strikeouts to just 8 walks in 32 2/3 innings. On June 2nd, Petrick was promoted to Palm Beach where he began in the bullpen. He made 5 relief appearances before moving to the starting rotation and has made 4 starts since. In 9 total appearances, Petrick had a 3-0 record with a miniscule 0.27 ERA and 32 stikeouts in 33 1/3 inning. Petrick’s combined ERA is 0.55 in 66 innings. Very impressive for an undrafted free agent. Zach Petrick was an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of the University of Northwestern Ohio and began his professional career with the Johnson City Cardinals, a Cards’ rookie affiliate, of the Appalachian League. Petrick will turn 24 on July 29th. While Petrick’s numbers have been insane, I have hesitated putting him on my top 20 prospect list so far this season. He was extremely old for the levels he was at prior to Double-A. I have thrown this stat out before, but 82% of the batters he has faced have been younger. Compare that to less than 1% for Michael Wacha and 4% for Carlos Martinez. The point is, Petrick has been beating up on younger hitters. The promotion to Double-A is huge for me. If he can have some of the success he has shown all season, he will appear on the next top prospect update at the beginning of August. I recently wrote about 5 prospects who were ready for a promotion and Petrick is the first to get promoted. Could another on my list, Joe Cuda, follow? We will see. This is a huge step for Petrick and we will be watching closely. The Texas League can be challenging for pitchers, but we feel that Petrick will be able to continue his amazing run.   Related articles Anthony Garcia and Zach Petrick are June Players of the Month (cardinalsfarm.com) Zach Petrick shines again, lowers season ERA to 0.61 – 7/5 Farm Report (cardinalsfarm.com) 5 Prospects Ready for Promotion (cardinalsfarm.com)
